Innoculating through filters
    #1796360 - 08/09/03 07:14 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Anybody innoculate directly through your filter without opening the jar? Its come to my attention that with filterdisks you can do this(Ive been using them for 6 months, never figured it out) Can you do this with tyvek? It seems it would leave a hole, But MM assures me you CAN innoculate through the filterdisk

Yes you can. If you still have the metal lid on it, just spin it around so it covers the injection hole.

or you can put a little piece of tap over the part that you inoculated through or you can put another filter disk on top of the one that you inoculated through.

Hi resin, I'm in Australia and getting hold of those quart/threaded top jars impossible. These are Fowler food pressure cooking preserving 1lt jars. They have metal spring on top fastens the lid down with a rubber O ring seal on the glass edge. (Any Aussies reading, you can get them at Magnet Mart Hardware).

Pic below shows the glass lip on where the O ring goes around.

Anyway, the inoculation hole is simply a small nail hole through the steel lid and some packaging tape, folded on one side to make a lip for easy peel back for fast squirting of spores/mycelium. The tape survives the pressure cooker. There's no inoculation through filter material. I tried that once on polyfill, it jammed and bent the needle and still left (well I thought it did) a fine hole through the polyfill. Haven't had drama with the packaging tape. Fast and simple.

Resin, you have more of a chance of getting contamination from taking the filter disk off to inoculate than making a tiny hole through it and re-sealing with tape. I believe this is what almost everyone does (I know my foaf does) and nobody seems to have any problem with it. It's tried and true.

Yeah they're sorta old fashioned as Fowler has been around years. As for conventional jars with threaded tops & metal lids, most are now no longer common in the supermarket (as I recall when I was a youngin') unless you obtain jars used with olives and pickled foods. You can't even get keer and ball here of any sort, let alone the desired shoulderless mason jars...in fact I haven't seen a shoulderless jar in my life, so PF tek means drinking glasses and foil.

My turtle uses tyvek. Keep the tin foil on the jar, lift a corner of the tinfoil just enough to sneak the needle in. Poke through tyvek, inject, withdraw needle and push tinfoil back down over hole. No tape is necessary and your contam rates will be very low. And he does not use the metal lids, just the rings.

But if you inject through the small hall and tape it up, you're only taping the metal lid

And if there is ANY space at all between the tyvek and the lid then air can go under the lid(where the big hole is), travel through the space between the tyvek and the lid towards the small hole, then down through the small hole that you made in the tyvek... or am I wrong?
