Agrocybe Aegerita grow. * 1
    #17997017 - 03/22/13 11:47 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I've been wanting to grow this for a while and stumbled across one in the gourmet section of a local store.  Cloned it on both LMEA and BRF agar.

It took readily to both and in fact pinned like crazy on the BRF.

I grew it on millet.  Just for fun.  I had some extra laying around.  Then I GTG'd the millet to rye.  Then to sawdust enriched with bran.

I did not case these because the grows I have seen have fatter stems on uncased subs.  So far, my stems don't look terribly fat.  Still, I am pleased overall.  1 bag out of two is fruiting; the other is moving more slowly and hasn't pinned.

They are in a Martha with some Kings and seem to like that environment - humid and probably higher C02 than oysters would tolerate.

Anyway, here is some a. aegerita porn from the start!

Thanks, all.  Jeff, yours were a large part of my inspiration and I remember you saying sometime or another they were your favorite edible.

I would eat them today as I'm sure they're prime; however, they still need to open up a bit to print.  So, maybe tomorrow.  They did get a little bigger overnight.

I checked them yesterday and the veil still had not quite let go.  This morning they have grown a surprising amount overnight and the veils on many have lifted free, giving them that "hamburger bun" look.  So my spore print hopes will be realized!!  I plan to eat them for breakfast in a couple of omelettes.  I will add another shot of them after I have infused myself with more coffee!

Here is how they look this morning!  I guess I was a little ahead of myself yesterday with excitement!!  The veils have that hamburger bun look and have separated.  Omelette time is NOW!

Cool clusters you got there Queen! The quality of the cultures you get from your local store are very impressive.

Thanks!  There was a little styrofoam box with a. aegerita, pleurotis nebrodensis, and nameko in a little "gourmet" pack.  Not a whole lotta mushrooms for about 6.99 or so but a good investment for those who clone!

Very nice!

I considered a few species to grow indoors but I saw that this one develops pins at low temps ( 50-60° F (10-16° C) ). Is this right? What is the temperature in your FC?

It pinned in the bag at room temperature.  Then I put it in my Martha, which is in an unheated room that's usually around 60-65 degrees.  It seemed to like that!  I kept a little humidity tent (read: clear grocery bag) over it for a few days to make sure the pins didn't abort, then took it off.

I have an ultrasonic humidifier on a shelf in the Martha, then a fan which turns on for one minute every eight minutes and blows air through.

I do believe they like cooler temps and are quite tolerant of higher CO2 levels, making them a good partner for Kings.

I have another bag starting to pin in the Martha now.  Probably the best pin-set I have had to date.  Pretty sure the majority will abort but I should have a decent harvest by next week.

Edit: added pic.

That looks like a fantastic pinset Jeff!!  I'd be scared of it aborting!  But yours is cased so you probably won't have that issue.  I was really stressed over mine (due to recent mass aborting of tiger sawgill!! :frown: ) so I put a bag with holes over it.  Kind of like I do Kings.  But I sure didn't get that nice all-over pinset, just a couple really fat clusters.  Good luck; can't wait to see how it does!

As an aside, I just finished eating them.  They may be my new favorite!!  So delicious.  Even stems delicious.  Even when well cooked (sauteed in butter/garlic) they retain such a pleasing crunch.  I do believe I like them better than Kings! (Never thought I'd say that!!)

I am glad you liked them!

Clusters is about all I got prior to casing and the majority of those would either be growing on the side of the bag where the myc had climbed up or close to the edge.  The last few grows I have been casing and get much more even pin-sets.  20 or so will take off and most of the other pins abort.

Hey queen, are the store bought mushrooms from a company called "mycopia" by any chance?
