$116 total is what my friend spent when he used to grow. He had a whole expense log but deleted it thinking he wouldn't need it. -Mr.Sleep

When my iguana was growing, she only paid 80 dollars to start out. the only thing she had to buy after that was consumables (vermiculite, brf, wbs, lids). and that kind of stuff is pretty cheap. she could do 12 jars at a time, but she was growing just for the life experience.

I don't want to think about how much my friend has spent. Any hobby can become expensive if you let it though.

Oh god, why do you guys spend so much money?? have you heard of straw logs?? And monkey, how did you spend so much on spores? 1 spore print = 10 syringes 10 syringes = 50 jars(at least) 4 jars or so to spawn a bulk, save the rest in fridge....

It that information accurate? Can 1 spore print really make 10 syringes? I am refering to spore prints you get off of TLG and other venders

For anyone starting out,
PC--pseudo-optional. From the reports here, some folks seem to be having success without one, but it's a good thing to have. Cost--variable, good ones on ebay, thrift stores.
Jars--important. Free if you keep your eyes open, cheap otherwise.
Some kind of jar-lid-filter--Filter discs/autoclaveable lids are very very nice, somewhat $$. Polyfill/tyvek is much cheaper, and can make use of the [rust-prone] lids that come with jars.
Air filter--important, IMO. Some folks do fine without, most have problems after awhile. If you can make do without, go for it. Even a small wallmart hepa filter makes a difference. Check around, these are often discarded in thrift stores but may need a filter replacement. Ionizers, e.g. 'ionic breeze' type air cleaners also help, but tend to be $$.
Grain--cheap. Play with various WBS brands for ultra cheap.
Inoculum--spore syringe=cheap, agar inoculum=significantly more effort and $$ [but worth it!]
Glovebox--Inverted rubbermaid with hand holes=good enough the majority of time. Cheap. Flow hoods. . .sky is the limit on $$.
Bulk substrate [if using bulk]--very cheap or very expensive. ZooDoo is phenomenal substrate, for example, but a small bucket is over 10$. A bail of straw that weighs more than you do will cost about 6$. Some pre-fab'd composts seem to work well from reports here, and are a nice middle ground.
Fruiting trays--As much as you want to spend. You'd be surprised what is in your house [or thrift stores] that work great as fruiting trays.
Fruiting environment--As much as you want to spend. Garbage bags w/o coolmist can work [i.e. bulk neglect]. The greenhouses described above are really nice for what you pay. Coolmists are very often in thrift stores, under 10$. Retail above 30$.
There are several other little things that come along. . .mister, casing material, dessicant [maybe], fan [maybe]. Back in the day, I spent quite a pretty penny on this hobby and don't regret it a bit. It's fun, don't forget!

I can't begin to count all the expenses. Over year and half...
$220 - flowhood (including HEPA and Motor) $140 - 20+ spore syringes over 2 years $100 - various humidifiers (4) $100 - vermiculite, worm castings, perilite, coir $100 - substrate materials (popcorn, hominy, brown rice flour) $120 - jars, jars, more jars (1/2 pints, pints, quarts + extra lids) $60 - 20qt PC $50 - Indoor 4 shelf greenhouse $100 - containers (terrariums, casing containers, incubation containers, glovebox containers) $75 - appliance timers, electric times (6, some digital, to control "on/off" of devices) $60 - hygrometers, thermometers $45 - indoor hepa filter (small) $30 - plastic drop sheeting to control contams $30 - shelving for homemade mini greenhouse $30 - santitation supplies (lysol, bleach, alcohol, peroxide) $30 - power strips, extension cords $20 - lights light lights $85 - misc materials (disposable gloves, chemical gloves, masks, duct tape, wire mesh, plastic tubing, polyfil, tyvek, electrical tape, platic ties, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, garbage bags, sprayers, more duct tape, rags, ziploc plastic bags, sealant/caulk,filters)
Hope this helps. I have a tendency to overspend, and haven't been particularly frugal. Many of the above can be cannibalized or scavenged from other things.
