First mantra of the hobby - "Patience." Germination can occur as early as 2 -3 days, but it may take up to a week or more for he first signs of germination to show. It depends on a multitude of factors - some of which are: temperature, substrate, spore concentration, age of the spores, etc. There are so many different relevant factors it is very hard to determine within the 1st2 weeks why you have not shown germination. Give it at least a week before you worry, and at least 2 weeks before you panic. All you need are 2 spores to germinate and take over the entire jar - and luck is on your side when proper procedures are followed. Please be patient and do not panic after only 2 days, no matter how fast you've read other people's colonization was. Their setup, factors, everything varies just slightly from yours. Now, after a period of time with no germination, analyze all of the possibilities (such as temperature, water content, sterilization procedures, etc.) that would hinder growth. This is your best bet on learning the life cycle, and also learning the peculiarities of your personal setup (as far as variations go).

Wait 10 days if nothin not even a tiny amount of mycellium on the sides of the jars starts then you can begin to worry about colonization problems once it gets around to 15 you can worry even more which could mean you messed up on innoculation, your spores weren't viable, your jars were too hot when you innoculated, or simply that your temps aren't right.

I suggest you build an incubator for colonization there's many teks around here that will help you accomplish this task. And with this you will be able to know sooner if everything is going well or if you have some problems coming up.

It can take up to a month (extreme case.) It's up to you when to worry; I don't.

I mean inoculate more jars with spores or mycelia or whatever. Just what I do when I'm worried.

I've had HUGE bags take two months to colonize; I thought they were bad, forgot about them, checked them two months later and they were colonized and fruited fine. Sometimes it's just a weak syringe with not many viable spores, unless the spores got burnt....

If your friend didn't wait till the jars cooled to innoculate it killed the spores upon entry "thermal death" always wait overnight to innoculate for safety.

I'd recommend you PC a set of 12 jars let em cool overnight and innoculate again.(of course give the jars already innoculated time to show if they were done right or not) and if the jars do start colonizing hell you have extra jars that you can experiment around with. Try a casing if you get enough gutz to go there you'll never go back.

Were the jars warm to his touch??? If the jars were warm to his touch imagine how warm they could have been to the mycro world. I suggest waiting at least six hours unless you use a fridge to cool your jars which can result in jars breaking at times if your careless(sometimes happens at random though even if your careful)
