Hypsizygus tessulatus - buna shimeji and Pholiota nameko

Finally achieved successful fruiting on the third isolate. They are past prime maturity but I'm getting as much pleasure from the cultivation as the eating...and they are beautiful.
Almost six months from inoc on HW pellets/alfalfa.

Very nice Shu. I still have not gotten these to fruit. There are four or five bags still kicking around. I'll have to check on them.

Excellent work Shu!
Those are about as healthy looking as any H.t.s that I have seen so far.
I have been working with this species for a while, but have found it hard to get clean/strong spawn.
Six months. Supplemented sawdust. Very cool.
Thanks for sharing,
JD

Thanks Jeff and thanks JD.
Here's another species I can tick off my to-do list.

Good Job! Is yours a white strain? I fruited these earlier this year and was amazed at how resistant to contam they are up until the first flush. Once I peeled the bags they sat for a month, with no signs of contam. My fruiting blocks are now outside, covered with two or three different molds and are about to flush again. I might be lucky to get a half pound total per block but they were so deliciuos.

Great info, Shu! I'd been recycling the mycelium of old H. tessulatus blocks which I thought would never fruit. I've got one last block from 6/4. I'll keep this is the FC!

I hope they taste better than they look. That slime is hard to get past.

Thanks Terry. I incoculated the bag directly with LC at the end of April and let them sit on a shelf in my basement all summer while I worked on stuff that's supposed to be green. Then mid-September I put the H.t., P.n., and a bag each of P. cyanofriscosa, two shiitake strains and L. sulphureus in a SGFC on my back deck under a shrub. Three weeks later at the threat of frost I cut open the tops and put them in my FC. The friscosas and sulphur shelf haven't done anything but the others all fruited.

Thanks A. virosa. I don't know if they are supposed to be a white strain. After getting skunked by two shipments from sporefarmerdotcom I got them from a gentleman on the I Wants thread as simply H.t. They were tasty but I have to say rather non descript. Shiitake are still my favorite but there are so many yet to taste. Peace out.

Sporeformerdotcom is an extremely disreputable site. I ordered some edibles from them once, and they were always "in the mail tomorrow." I got my money back eventually. Apparently, these were for cultures they didn't have. They seemed to have just a fraction of the cultures they advertise. They take an order for a species, and then look around to see if they can find it from some "real" vendor. Nothing like selling something you don't have!

Todays harvest 1300g, half went into 1.5 qt soup. After cooking they are quite mild, should have used a little less thyme than for shiitake but still very tasty.
4 months from direct injection with LC (6 weeks at 75F, then 65F, then last three weeks at 70 opened). On the left I cut the top off the bag after pins formed, on the right I popped out the filter only.
Left Right Gross Weight.... 4Lb 7Lb
%Dry Basis HW pellets......... 74 70 Spent rice malt... 6 20 Alfalfa................ 18 9 Gypsum............. 2 1 Lime.................. 0.1 0.05

Great stuff.
I have a new culture of this species, and hope to see those NON-decurrent gills soon.

Real nice Shu
I had some decent luck with the H. Tessulatus, but I kept getting a ton of aborts. Not sure what I needed to change, but I still got some pretty good yields.

I can see a few aborts in your pics as well, but no where near what my cake put out. Any insight into what causes excess pinning with this species?

Maybe the aborts have something to do with the burst of FAE from cutting the top off the bag vs just making a hole. According to the standard parameters they need more CO2 and less FAE during fruiting than during initiation. But these are my 2nd and 3rd bags of H.tessulatus and I'm just guessing.
