bottom casing layer, or not?
    #1797976 - 08/10/03 01:22 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

The Casing 101 tek calls for a bottom casing layer of moistened vermiculite, but I noticed that the casing FAQ indicates that a bottom layer might not be such a great idea. The person in question has used up the last of his verm preparing his 60/40, so he's considering a bottom layer of perlite or not using a bottom layer at all. Or he could always get more verm. He is a first-time caser. Advice?

i think perlite would give out to much humidity for a casing, considering thats what perlite is used for...but i'm no expert, it just seems like it would make sense, i'd do verm just to be safe

like it says, up to you whether to use one or not. i don't, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. pros and cons either way.

if you do, perlite and verm are both good choices.

The verm bottom layer is used to absorb moisture so no water pools up an causes problems...I have used perlite before and it did just fine. It will get dirty an you have to chunk it afterwards unless you just enjoy cleaning perlite ...go for it.

He ended up using a fairly thin layer of perlite sprayed with 10:1 water and peroxide, and a 60/40 casing mix in a foil loaf pan. The whole thing's wrapped in saran-wrap and covered by a dark flannel pillowcase for opacity. Here's hoping it does well.

Good thing he went thin on the perlite though... two cakes took up much more space in the pan than he anticipated.

I use it for "moisture insurance" in the event there is too much moisture (it'll sop it up) buildup of for those times you felt trigger happy with your spritzer.

Yeah -- I just put a thin layer of partially dampened vermiculite underneath; just enough to coverr the bottom so there are no holes.
