"Fuck you! We do what we want!"
Stairway to Cleveland, lyrics as sung by Jefferson Starship

Three from PJ O'Rourke:

America wasn't founded so that we could all be better. America was founded so we could all be anything we damn well pleased.

One of the annoying things about believing in free will and individual responsibility is the difficulty of finding somebody to blame your problems on. And when you do find somebody, it's remarkable how often his picture turns up on your driver's license.

The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it.

"Human beings are free to adopt self-destructive ideas, but we are not free to make them work. Ideas based on a faulty view of human nature can grip the imagination of the powerful for decades, wreak havoc and suffering on untold millions, but they cannot triumph in the end. What is contrary to nature, including human nature, cannot ultimately survive." -- Maggie Gallagher

"Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all." ?- Frederic Bastiat

"The wildest hippie and the sternest member of the Politburo share the same daydream, the daydream that underlies all Marxism : That a thing might somehow be worth other than what people will give for it." -- P.J. O'Rourke

A bunch from Thomas Sowell --

"It is amazing how many people act as if the right to free speech includes the right to be free of criticism for what you say -- which means that other people should not have the same right to free speech that they claim for themselves."

"People are not stupid. There are just certain things that they do not think about. And if you don't think about those things, then it doesn't matter whether you are a genius or a moron."

"Irresponsible behavior begins and ends with the individual. Being tempted is not a justified cause of action."

"We seem to be getting closer and closer to a situation where nobody is responsible for what they did but we are all responsible for what somebody else did."

"As long as human beings are imperfect, there will always be arguments for extending the power of government to deal with these imperfections. The only logical stopping place is totalitarianism -- unless we realize that tolerating imperfections is the price of freedom."

"The people I feel sorry for are those who insist on continuing to do what they have always done but want the results to be different from what they have always been."

Three more from PJ --

"When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators."

"Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys."

"A little government and a little luck are necessary in life. But only a fool trust either of them."

Politics and sex --

Ann Coulter was being questioned by the other denizens of The View.? One of the ladies asked Ann (why, I don?t know) if she had ever seen two women having sex.? Her answer:? ?Not since I saw Katie Couric interview Hillary Clinton.? That was the last time.?

PJ O'Rourke again -- "I have often been called a Nazi, and, although it is unfair, I don't let it bother me. I don't let it bother me for one simple reason. No one has ever had a fantasy about being tied to a bed and sexually ravished by someone dressed as a liberal."

"THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF" - Roosevelt

I never thought this a was a good quote, until now. Bush has successfully turned the US into a country full of chicken-shits. We're so scared that we're willing to pay more taxes for a Department of Homeland Security. We're so scared that we're willing to give up our constitutional liberties in exchange for the Patriot Act. We're so scared that we're willing to kill tens of thousands of people in a pre-emptive war on Iraq. Were so scared that we've become racist against people of middle eastern decent. We're so scared that... well the list goes on and on, and you get the point.

"Fear is the path to the dark side... fear leads to anger... anger
leads to hate, hate leads to suffering." - Yoda

An ancient challenge issued by King Leonidas of Sparta. In 480 B.C., he and 300 of his Spartan warriors occupied the narrow pass at Thermopylae to delay the onslaught of the gigantic Persian army. Historians put the size of the Persian forces between 150,000 and 2 million men.
When ordered by the Persian commander to give up their weapons, Leonidas shouted back, "Molon labe!" or "Come take them!" The valiant Greeks fought to the last man and bought precious time for their countrymen to prepare.

Someone had this in their sig:

I used to have this one in my sig:

We have a new type of rule now. Not one-man rule, or rule of aristocracy or plutocracy, but of small groups elevated to positions of absolute power by random pressures and subject to political and economic factors that leave little room for decision.

They are representatives of abstract forces who have reached power through surrender of self. The iron-willed dictator is a thing of past.

There will be no more Stalins, no more Hitlers.

The rulers of this most insecure of all worlds are rulers by accident. Inept, frightened pilots at the controls of a vast machine they cannot understand, calling in experts to tell them which buttons to push.

William S. Burroughs

The money powers prey upon the nation in times of peace and conspire against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, and more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces as public enemies, all who question its methods or throw light upon its crimes. I have two great enemies, the Southern Army in front of me and the Bankers in the rear. Of the two, the one at my rear is my greatest foe. Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money powers of the country will endeavor to its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in the hands of a few, and the Republic is destroyed. - Abraham Lincoln

"My motto from here on out is: If someone or something (including me) in my life is conducting themselves in such a way that they can be seen on Jerry Springer, it's time to take out the garbage!!! When you stop taking their behaviour personally and see their antics as a true reflection on their character, it becomes absolutely nauseating." Anon. on abusive relationships.

(Quote from "Conversations With God"(I think) in so many words)

"The goal of all politicians is to convince you that their best interests are your best interests"

BTW Autonomous: I had no idea Jefferson Starship had such a song. I'll have to check into that. I always thought they got lame once they changed their name to "Starship", but those lyrics aren't lame.
