this actually has a pretty decent f2p model.. the only real in game advantage you can get from spending money is a larger stash, which i think at max is $20.... now it is an arpg and if you've ever played them, having a large stash is important, but it does max out so it's not like they're always trying to worm you out of more money. the rest seems like new character animations and special effects for your spells and special effects for your gear... you can pay to make your in game character look cooler personally i'd rather just play a flat fee for the game and have everyone have the same thing, but apparently others wouldn't

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence. I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Yeah same here. If you are going to nickel and dime me left and right in a "F2P" game in order to advance, I'd rather just buy the game for $40 or $60 out the gate and not have to worry about any of that bullshit. If they are micro-transactions that are just superficial stuff then whatever, but if they give you some major in-game advantage, that's kinda bullshit. I do think a lot of the F2P games are starting to look in the right direction though.
I too would rather pay a flat fee and have everyone on the same playing field. Or you could just be like Diablo 3, where it's 100% gear based, and you can spend 100s and 100s of hours grinding out gold and gear.... in the HOPES that RNG might just be good enough to you to get perfect gear... Or someone can bust out daddy's credit card and buy the best possible gear on the RMAH and have a better character than the guy who spent hundred and hundreds of hours grinding.
(I think this model is pretty stupid BTW - but what can you do?) At least I can sell to those idiots.

The model ssems to be making money.
and at least free players get to play at all.
I like where it's going too.

A totally different paradigm for free to play games would be interesting, an mmo where content was kickstarted for example - if adequate donations were raised they'd create it and everyone would have access to it. Rather than personal advantages, supporting the game would have communal advantages for everyone.

Not a true MMO but they tout themselves as such: World of Tanks.
I've played since closed beta and while it can be frustrating at times, it has had me playing for more than two years fairly consistently. It is totally free to play, but like all F2P games you can spend money on it to gain XP at a faster rate, reducing the grind some what.
There is also another game called: War Thunder.
It is in beta too and is an air combat game. Again, not a true MMO but has been thrown into the genre as WoT.
Finally there is Planet Side 2. This is a FPS set on massive maps with 2000 players per map. It is sci-fi and kind of hard on your rig, but it can be a lot of fun especially when there is a big push or defense taking place. You can use vehicles and aircraft and there a several different classes to choose from. Again not an MMO in the true sense of the word, but great fun, free to play but as always a bit of real money will help you out.
cheers

DDO (dungeons and dragons online) is completely free to play now. They also have hi res texture packs to be installed for those with newer systems.
I just got my new computer built and delivered. i7-3820 overclocked @ 4.2ghz, 16GB ram, nvidia 680, SSD, etc. Now I'm in the process of trying to find games to play on it that are f2p since I'm dead broke now. haha. Planetside 2 is my main squeeze though its really a massive shooter, hawken and world of tanks also installed because of nvidia's free in game money codes for people who buy their cards. DDO installed as I was on the same hunt.
If I can't find something worthwhile to hold me over until the new elder scrolls mmo comes out I will most likely buy guild wars 2 since its f2p after initial game purchase. and not pay to win either.

Just started it today, only a few games under my belt and it is fun, but hard. I'm a bit annoyed that out of the 10k gold I got with my video card, that literally only bought me a SINGLE tank. wtf with their prices?!?!
Even in planetside 2 which is EXPENSIVE for f2p stuff, I was able to get about 14 weapons.

Yeah, but you did buy a top tier premium tank. For that much gold you could have bought like 3-4 lower tier tanks and still had some gold to spare. But yeah their prices are pretty high. It's fucking fun though. Once you get good it gets even more fun.

But still, that literaly works out to about 45 bucks in REAL cash to buy this tank. For that much I should get more damn benefits then this imo. Just seems like they are really rapey in this game compared to others. Usually in f2p games when you spend about 50 bucks you get a fuuuuccckkkklooooaddd of stuff or perks to make it worth buying an entire game in value.
Like, I should have gotten like 5 premium tanks or something.

You could've gotten 5 premium tanks.. just lower tier ones
But ya I too noticed the prices are pretty rapey. 12,000 coins is $50. That'll maybe buy you one top tier premium tank with maxed out crew. But I guess they gotta make their money somewhere. It is a damn fine game and probably one of the best F2P models I've seen. And they do run promotions often, so it's probably best to try and save gold for when they are running special promos on tanks and whatnot.
Although yeah I think some of the prices are just wtf. Premium status for 1 year is $100.. wtf. But I guess a lot of people pay like $200 a year on fucking world of warcrack so I guess they can get away with it.
I honestly can't say whether I'd be AS into the game, if I didn't start with some starter gold. That definitely helped get me hooked. But I even went and bought some gold after the fact, so it definitely sucked me in. The gold just makes your quality of life better in the game (leveling crew to 100% right away, converting premium exp to free exp.. etc), but I could probably live without it.
