bulk pasteurization question?

so i put my bulk sub inside of oven bags, placed them in my cooler, and added some medium warm water, then added hot water to the cooler until it reached 155 degrees, closed the cooler, chekced on the water one hour later, and it was at 153. but the inside of my bags were barely 130? how? the water was a constant 150 for a little over an hour.. and i good? did the bags just cool rapidly when i took them out to check there inner temp? im so frustrated

Basic physics. Not all materials conduct heat at the same rate. Water, which is a great heat conductor can heat up very fast and cool down almost as fast. Whatever you are using as your bulk sub probably does not conduct heat as well, so will either take longer to reach the same temp or may never reach the same temp at all. It is like roasting meat in an oven. You set the oven for 350 but even after an hour, most roasts only get to about 160 or so. Which is fine for eating, but that roast would never get to the 350 mark, if it did, it would be charcoal.

It's called specific heat. And no your not good. The core temp is what matters. The center of the bag must reach pAsturization temp for one hour.

Yes. You can use the drain plug to drain the cooler water out as you add hotter water assuming ur cooler has one.

Sure can. Depending on how big the bags are it might take an hour or more to reach core temp in the center of the bag. Start timing then.

one more thing, and afterwards a little moisture escapes, can i add some 170 degree water to it to re hydrate after it has been pasteurized? it should be fine, when i should it moderately hard, its stream for a few seconds, and if i squeeze it light/medium ish a few drops come out.. is that good? if i had to add like, verm or something would i have to re pasteurize?

You should barely be able to get one or two drops out when u squeeze it as hard as u can. No streams. Sounds too wet

That would take forever hand squeeze the substrate to field capacity and get ready for hand cramps lol.
Pastuerizing in a jar is the way to go or use the oven bag in a big pot with a lid on the stove either probably works better than using the oven but idk.

I just pasteurized some substrate earlier and lost the whole batch because I let temps go above 175 so you are doing better than me lol.

After 180 you are sterilizing I think over 170 for too long you are partially sterilizing the sub. 170 is probably fine but I dont want to waste my spawn I just start over if temps rise over 170 for too long. With coir its fine but I use horse manure so its a little more tricky than coir
