success
    #1797338 - 08/10/03 04:59 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

This word is very subjective, alot of people measure success in money, or "accoplishments, and for the first part of my life I did too, I thought that if I died before I made some HUGE difference in the world that my life would have been wasted.

but recently I've realized that there wasn't much to "life" really, and that in all likelyhood there's no "meaning" of life.

so i think that a man could be measured "successful" if he just enjoyed his life overall, if he looked back at his life and could say that he had the best time that he could.

but I also think that you've gotta help out your fellow man (or woman, whatever) just help them have a good time too, share, be compassionate, make things easier on everyone.

I'm rambling now, but what I meant to ask was how do all of you measure success?

Money?
Fame?
Happiness?
Power?

2 FOOT DICK?!?!?!?!

I try to measure success for myself by how much I have grown spiritually.

Recently an old friend from college contacted me after many years of no contact. I smiled when I saw his name on the email. He said he had tried for a long time to find out what happened to me and how to contact me. It turns out the only thing he wanted to know was what kind of job I had. After he found that out he stopped emailing. He just wanted to do a midterm status check to compare himself to his peers in terms of financial status. It saddened me that that's what success meant to him.

There is no meaning really, I guess, except for evoultion. We make the meaning in our lives, whether someone else's meanings have been imposed on us and we believe them, or if we consciously decide what we are here for, and work towards that...
We're basically here to Experience, I guess.
Peace.

Survival.
Love.
Intelligence.
Art.
Fun.

It's quite hard to stay happy all the time, but success for me is not backtracking too much in the way of feeling good.

My measure of success is happiness. What good is money, fame, power, or a 2 foot dick if you aren't happy with it? Further, what good is love and helping out your fellow man if that doesn't make you happy? I'm not saying love and kindness don't make me happy, but for some people it probably doesn't. Whatever makes you happy, do it. If I were looking back on my life when I when I'm much older I would not consider myself successful no matter if I solved all the world's problems if I wasn't happy doing it. Twenty years from now I would rather be living in poverty happily at peace with myself and around people I love than be a greedy, bitter millionaire.

Success, to me, is based on one's goals....

If one has accomplished most of their [self-] important goals, then they are "Successful."

Even a crackhead in the alley could be successful if he is set on continueing to smoke crack in the dark alley until he overdoses and dies.... if he follows through with that goal, then he is a very successful man

Where do you draw the line? What if someone can only be happy if they are hurting or exploiting others?

Our world is a f***ed up place and there are plenty of people with (what to me seems like f***ed up minds but I'll be fair and say...) different thoughts and perspectives than mine who probably do enjoy hurting and exploiting others. If that is what makes them happy, that's quite pathetic, but that's the way it is. There will probably always be people like this so I just don't really worry about it and do my best not to be the person getting hurt or exploited by them.

But do you think people who are only happy by hurting others are born that way and no matter how they are raised they will feel that way or is a result of the environment and conditions they grew up in?

I too, personally, draw the line there, but just because you and I and others draw the line there doesn't mean some people don't. What can be done about it? Thats why I try not to worry what other people do and do my best to live a happy, therefore successful IMO, life.

I understand your point even if it is tongue-in-cheek. However, as most of us are fractured beings, I would define success as that of accomplishing or living up to your highest dream.

I have no clue.  I have been toying with the idea that before we come to this incarnation, we have some hand in choosing some of the factors that will be present in this life.  If this is true, perhaps that before that type of person comes she or he chooses to go through those things.  Why?  To have the human experience, just like everyone else coming here.
Like I said, it's just a thought I've entertained for a while.  No clue as to whether it has any basis in reality

I have been 'toying' with that idea for quite sometime myself. excellent theory!
