Grains and their by-products, like flour, need to be sterilized and remain in sterile conditions until 100% colonized.

Use 1 brick (~650KG) 3 qts fine vermiculite and 5 qts water. Add a handful(~1/4cup) gypsum if you have it.

That post is 10 years old and it sucks. No offense.

Use proper pastuerization for best chance of success. The Bucket tek is hit or miss at best.

Here's a good proper pasteurization thread.

I hate to be an ass, but how do you even know you need verm and coir and water without knowing how much to use...?

Here's the substrate calculator anyway... Haven't used it myself but I've seen in linked several times.
http://substratecalculator.info/

I don't think brown rice will help if you are doing bulk... I've used BRF cakes spawned to bulk, but never heard of putting brf in bulk substrate. If your going to put 4 inches, you also need to factor in your spawn along with coir, verm, and water.

I use bag coir as well.
a bricks weight is 650grams

weigh out the coir and use that amount with the teks using a brick.

Well for sure step it up to bulk, you wont be disappointed. I'm assuming your 18 jars are PF cakes? Then when your ready take them to a cheese shredder and dump that into your sub. If your using Half Pints, 18 half pints would be 9 pints would be just over 4Qts which should be enough for a 60 qt tub. I think used 4 or 5qts for my 60Qt tub.

I also dont know about using the loose powdered coir. I've only used and heard about using brick. I thought I actually saw somewhere not to used the powdered coir for some reason. Not sure though.

I understand your asking for help.... but so many people before have asked for help and you could benefit greatly by searching a little more and finding some information for yourself. There is a lot of conflicting info but a lot of different things work for different people. If you have a question, before posting it, search it, you will almost always find something that will steer you in a direction. If you cant find any answers no matter how hard you search, then ask questions.

use a towl [Re: Paver2013]
    #17972912 - 03/18/13 09:04 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I like the bucket method. I've used damiens' 50/50 with gypsum and a little coffee and I used to have problems with it but I like to wrap the bucket in a towel or two and keep it insulated longer.  I think the extra towel pasteurizes it better but if you have green mold get it out right away don't bother cutting it. dont forget to bring a towel
