what affect does substrate choice (and casing vs. cakes) have on potency?

it's been my experience that PF cakes have turned out weak (or at least not consistantly strong) mushrooms, while the cased poo trays i've done have grown high-grade mushrooms...

is this coincidence, or my imagination, or is there something to it?

are all shrooms not created equal?

Most people will argue that shrooms grown on grains or poo are more potent than those grown on brf/verm, but I've never heard of potency differences between casing and not casing.

Its mostly growing conditions. Substrates honestly do not make THAT much of a difference. Obviously there is a slight difference between the nutrient lacking substrates (straight popcorn) compared to somthing like WBS, which is full of nutrients.

WBS on poo/straw = Mushroom Jungle. let it be known. Also im sure most people will tell you a grain grown is more potent. im indecive.

Can't wait for the warmer weather to come, winter blows and pasteurisation outdoors would be hard to keep at 70C, can't do indoors or the wifey will use my testicles as a tobacco pouch, but so far millet/wbs is better than BRF in grunt...in time I'll see what happens in bulk on manure. But I'm not surprised mushmaster on your findings.

i haven't noticed a huge difference in potency between grain and brf , but i have noticed a big difference in doing cakes and casiongs. casings will definitely give you a better yield.

PF Cakes don't give you as good a yield as casing and such, but judging by SWIM's first taste of his first crop, BRF is just fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine when it comes to potency. :wink:
