Places to backpack for months/years at a time?

I'm planning on backpacking for around a year atleast, and would like to know where you guys suggest. I'm going to live off of the land, and want to see many beautiful areas. I will save up a lot of money before I go on this adventure for fuel, buses, replacing any material, etc. If anyone has experiences with backpacking for long periods of time I would like to hear some stories and suggestions!

Yeah this is another thing I was thinking about. Ways to avoid breaking the law as much as possible, but still hitting up national parks as much as I could.

If you're interested in seclusion and a long long backpacking trip while living off the land try going from New York to Alaska across Canada.
I've done it several times now (except I went from Alaska to New York) and loved it every time. It's kinda expensive, what with all of the permits, gear and paying for supply drops, but very rewarding.
Gear I take: (Besides the normal stuff like clothing, backpack, tent, sleeping bag.)
12 gauge pump shotgun with ammo (for protection against bear, moose, etc... along with hunting small game) (had to get two of the permits specifically for that, one for protection and another for hunting) (ammo includes "bird" shot and 00 Steel shot for protection)
GPS device (with ACCURATE MAPS!!!) (preferably one with an emergency beacon)
Map and compass (in case something happens to the GPS, which has happened to me 3 times now) (I bought individual topo maps for the precise areas I went) (several maps rolled up and in a seal-able tube straps very easily to the side of my pack and doesn't add much weight.)
Satellite phone (VERY IMPORTANT) (for emergencies and scheduling supply drops)
Fishing gear (I take a two piece rod and reel set, I store the rod "broken down" in my map tube and the reel in a pocket on my pack) including hooks, sinkers, bobbers, extra line (which I keep in a small plastic container with compartments to keep stuff separate)
Snare wire (for trapping food)
Magnesium block with flint rod on the side (for fire starting) (will light even wet tender) (one lasted me my whole trip but I had two just in case)
Fixed bladed knife (many uses such as cleaning game and for making tender) along with a sharpening stone (small one)
Hatchet/hand axe with sheath (strapped to the outside of my pack) (again, many uses including driving tent pegs to making a shelter)
Books (I take a few with me for reading next to the fire and for days when traveling isn't an option) (I always include one educational book such as a wild edibles book) (I sometimes switch out books at the supply drops)
TOILET PAPER (you'd be surprised by how many backpackers forget this and believe me you don't want to spend a month wiping your ass with leaves and bark)
Binoculars (small pair) (for not only looking around but also for scouting ahead at distance and for checking my back trail for predators, don't want to wake up with a bear or mountain lion staring at me)
Rope (I carry two types, twine for various things such as if I lose a boot lace I can replace it using twine and a braided climbing rope in case I have to lower myself down a cliff and such) (twine kept in my pack and the rope in a bundle strapped across the top of my pack)
First Aid kit (a properly stocked kit should include suture kits for stitching bad cuts) (VERY IMPORTANT for long trips in the wild where doctors don't exist)
A second pair of shoes (to wear in camp) (believe me, after hiking for 20-30 miles in boots you'll want a comfortable pair to wear in camp at the end of the day) (I keep mine in a nylon pouch/bag and store them in my pack while hiking)
I also take a good amount of weed with me along with a brass bowl to smoke it with but that's just me and I'm not suggesting you do the same, it's up to you (if you smoke) if you want to take the risk. I use a brass bowl while hiking because it's very hard to break unlike a glass bowl.
Somethings you should do BEFORE you take your trip is to research and read up on stuff like how to make a shelter and what's safe to eat. And you should take a course on emergency first aid to learn how to make sutures and when/where it's appropriate to make one, sometimes it's more appropriate to just call for help.
By "supply drops" I mean that I pay a friend to fly out supplies to predetermined spots. And the supplies varies depending on what supplies I need at the time.

Gandalf, you have a lot of great tips! I really like the extra campsite boots tip and to bring books for those days.I don't smoke weed right now because I'm on probation, but when I'm off I don't think ill smoke much anymore. Good tip for metal bowls though. I will be carrying a bow instead of a shotgun too. I like the Canada idea, but I am wanting to do do it in the USA. I was thinking about going to Oregon to start and then go more south. Thanks for the tips, I have a lot of these and have read about the rest but it doesn't hurt to hear why people bring/like them.
Johny, I have read a lot about Alaska now and it sounds great. I will definitely try it out when I'm more survival ready. Hawaii sounds beautiful! I've heard too much about it, and dream about it. The only reason I wouldn't want to go now, is because I would want to stay there for years and don't want to leave my family for that long yet.
Thanks everyone for suggestions and tips, please keep them coming!

I've spent most of a summer in the High Desert in Eastern Oregon. You can feed yourself easy with a 22 rifle and a fishing pole and a couple of snares. The canyons are amazing and there is year round water in many of them. I suggest the Pueblo Mt's or the Trout Creek Mountains. You may go the whole summer there and not meet another human. The winters are very harsh however.

Biscuit root, onions and dandelions. Lots of birds, rabbits, porcupine, beaver, rattlesnakes and desert adapted trout.

Ewww!!! Porcupine! I can't see how you could stand the taste of it. The one time I've tried it I spitted it right out. Yuck! But I'm like you I prefer grouse over snake, not saying rattlesnake tastes bad or anything, just prefer birds over it myself. I've eaten many different things over the years while outdoors but porcupine is at the top of my list to stay away from if I can help it. It's right up there with skunk and grubs.

I fully disagree. How the hell did you cook it? Their brains are particularly good imo.

I didn't cook it myself, it was at a gathering where I tried it. And I don't eat brains anymore. Before the mad cow crap hit the US I used to eat squirrel brains sauteed in butter but have lost the taste for brains since then.

You're missin out. Almost every part of an animal is good and much is better for you then the muscle meat. Especially in survival situations.

Not missing out on anything in my opinion. The only time I would use more than just the meat of wild game would be in a survival situation, in which case I would utilize everything of the animal as I could. Such as the liver and heart for example. Personally I don't like organ meat but in a survival situation I would eat what I had. I haven't been in such of a situation for a very long time now. The closest I came was during my SERE training in the Marine Corps. That was a bitch.

Old thread, but Wayne National Forest is pretty slack about backpackers living there. Go hike the Buckeye Trail.

Eastern Oregon mountains and Canyons. Northern California. Spring summer and fall only in the high desert though. Winters are brutal.

First time it took me over 10 months. It was rough as hell and by the end of it I had lost a ton of weight. I didn't judge my calorie burn correctly and I paid the price for it back then. I've learned better since. With better planned supply drops, I've done it in a little more than 8 months taking the northern route. Going further south I've done it in 6 months 29 days, but that was with a lot of hitchhiking.

Wow that's inspiring, good stuff.
Did you do any other long distance trips before you set out on this particular route? Or have you always been trekking through the wild?

I had done the A.T. (Appalachian Trail) 2 full length and 1 partial trip from Harpers Ferry W.V. south to Georgia before I tried my hand at northern Canada. The 2 full lengths were from Maine south to Georgia, one before and after the partial trip. I prefer the long ones myself.
And to answer your second question, well, ya, for pretty much as long as I can remember I've always have been either climbing over mountains or running through some woods or forests. Even as a kid living on army bases, if there was any type of woods or forests around, you would more likely find me running around in there then you would see me running the streets. Well there or around the gun ranges that is.

Real cool, thanks for sharing. Since I first read your post I've been looking at a map recently and DAMN what a mighty trip that is from Alaska to New York. I can only imagine how it felt inside to prevail over that. Besides the hitchhiking, did you run into any other souls like yourself?
Ever since I read the hilarious book 'A Walk in the Woods' by Bill Bryson I've wanted to do the AT. But as I'm right by the PCT might as well prep for that one first.

On occasion on my trips across Canada I would run into a few people like myself but I have come across many others along the A.T.
There was 1 guy I came across on my second time across northern Canada that had been living in the wilderness for around 40 years. He was cool and all at first, shared his campfire and meal with me even told me how he hardly ever sees anyone except once or twice a year when he would go into town for supplies, but as the night got on I started to get a weird vibe from him. One of those "I'm not too sure about sleeping with a guy like him around" type of vibes. At first I tried to brush the feeling off so I smoked some really good herb and drank the last of my whiskey with him, that's when he told me why he lives the way he does. Turns out he deserted the U.S. Army right before he was to be deployed to Nam. and was running from an alleged rape warrent. Two of some of the absolute worse things to say to me. One, I am very protective of women and children and two, I'm a former Marine of the U.S. Marine Corps. So you could see I didn't take the info from him lightly. He did explain to me about the alleged rape and, after some checking of my own, it turns out there was no rape. At the time he had just turned 18 and was dating/sleeping with a 16 year old girl. Her father hated the Army and pressed false charges. He tried to tell me that was why he deserted and not because he was too chicken shit to go to war. I didn't buy it.
Before leaving his camp I looked him in the eye and told him if I ever found out the rape was true I would hunt him down like the dog he is and torture him to death and as for the desertion I told him if I ever came across him again I would be likely to slit his throat and leave him for the animals. You see I don't particularly like draft dodgers but I can understand and tolerate them because they made the choice not to go into the military and I can live with that. But deserters I hold right up there with murders, rapist and child molesters. Can't stand them and won't tolerate them. He took an oath and gave his word to serve and then he broke it. To me a man is only as good as his word, if his word doesn't mean shit neither does he. Wow, that took a dark turn. Sorry about that. Just goes to show that you need to keep your guard up when you come across strangers in the wilderness, you can never be too sure about who you might come across.
As for you being near the P.C.T. (Pacific Coast Trail I'm presuming) I would definitely try it a few times first. I've heard quite a bit about it and have always wanted to try it myself but I've never had the chance. From what I've been told it is drastically different from the A.T., vastly different terrain and climate. Sounds like a real good challenge to me. If you do decide to go for it please keep us informed, sounds like it would be fun.

You would kill someone because they deserted the army? Wow, I hope I don't see you on any trails

Wow, you're words make me feel icky...and badly for you. But mostly icky.
The marines sure made you a winner. Geez..
And there's not justification in comparing a dude changing his mind about a decision, and a pedophile. Just no....that's ludicrous.
