Symbiotic contams
    #1795332 - 08/09/03 03:03 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Do they exist? Could they exist? I was always wondering if this could be done. Some other organism growing in the substrate that can fight off contams and possibly make the substrate easier to colonize, by becoming shroom food... i'll keep dreaming. all i realy want is maybe an article that talks about this to some legnth. For now i'll just wish i owned a pc.

Some bacteria can help out in this way with casings and bulk, as can some actinomycetes but it doesn't really work that way when dealing with a highly nutritious substrate. Nature is a lot more complicated; there is a countless number of organisms living in equilibrium in nature, and it isn't nearly as perfect for one specific organism than growing it in sterile conditions.

If you started growing a bacteria in brf, for example, it will most likely keep growing and would compete with the mycelium.

Yeah, actually. The thermophilic fungi and bacteria that make compost and that you encourage to grow with pasteurization are examples of these. I don't thikn these could work with things like BRF or grain, though.

Hmmm maybe if it were possible to study natural habitats where the mycellium and shrooms are growing exceptioanlly greater independent from more obvious things such as temperature humidity nutrients etc. posiibly a specific protozoan in a near by lake could be the cause, or even an insect? i suppose it would most likely be something liek a decomposing bacteria.

There are a lot of organisms in a specific habitat -- way more than we can even study with current technology.

There is a lot of research being done - especially about cultivation of mycorrhizal mushrooms, but this is beyond reach of amateurs.
For example for cultivation of Cantharellus cibarus you need to establish a symbiotic relationship between mushroom, plant & bacteria: http://www.mykopat.slu.se/mycorrhiza/kantarellfiler/texter/rtf.htm

Promoting Psudomomanas (beneficial bacteria proven to improve yield and time to pin with some species) is easy and anyone can do it. They prefer acetone over anything else as a nutrition source, but will grow on ethyl alcohol. Search for acetone or vodka teks for any of the remaining specifics.

The method turned out to be of little measurable improvement when growing cubensis, but has shown definite results with other species.

Also, many people are on this board are doing research between the relationship of the cold weather wood lovers and actinomycetes, with lots of theoretical basis, and some experimental results just now surfacing.

So, the idea is feasible, it has some limited applications, but is no panacea.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
