Compatibility issue with variable speed control / motor with capacitor

After contacting someone at: www.electricmotorwarehouse.com/kbwc.htm about their Solid State Variable Speed AC Motor Controls, I was told that that their product wouldn't work with my motor because my motor has a capacitor. I asked if there was another type of control that could be used with my motor, and the answer was no because any speed control would burn out motor.
My motor specs are: Emerson Model k55HXRCK-5446 HP 1/2 AMPS 9.2 PH 1 VOLT 115 R.P.M. 1075/4SPD ( title says 3SPD because motor's wired for it) CAPACITOR: 370 VAC 50-60HZ
I've seen variable speed controllers recommended by trusted cultivators here so I'm left wondering if I have an incompatible motor or if the gentleman at www.electricmotorwarehouse.com wasn't entirely correct or forthcoming with all information.
Any help, greatly appreciated!

He was 100% correct. You can not add a speed controller to a cap start motor. Your only option is to use the color for the speed you want from the motor. If you are building a flow hood with that motor, you will want to use the red speed (low) unless you are building a massive hood.

Just test the hood at different speeds till the flow is just over what you want then stack prefilters till laminar flow is achieved. The added prefiltration will prolong the life of your Hepa.

If you want to get fancy you can get a 4 position rotary switch to control speed. However, I'd just test it on one speed at a time until you find the sweet spot. Be sure to insulate the unused speed wires so they don't short to chassis. RR
