leave it the dry verm layer and just use the filter disks. makes preping pf tek much easier.
Ive seen RR mention a few times that he sometimes just ditcvhed the verm layer and used another filter when he was growing pf tek

you realize that shooting thru the filter disk ruins the filter disk right? Unless you are using injection ports, then just go with verm as a filter for pf tek. save the sfds for grain to grain or agar to grain transfers.

& yeah if you wanted to you could use a central filter disk siliconed on just like a grain jar. If I were you and going to do it, i'd make 4 injection ports with silicone near the rim. Edit: I see your new post. Yeah go with it man. No verm layer
Once you start loving the lids, get a PC

Got a PC already! I know boiling works but eh, everythings going into a PMP ( not using SGFC purely due to destructive and highly intelligent cats...)

I use rtv.silicone injection ports with painter suit tyvek no dry verm layer and get great results. Plus I feel its easier to inject the spores without having to make sure you get past the dry verm layer. All around much easier for me.. Oh yea also open air inoculate with these lids no need for sab. Contam free as of now.

Well my PMP is already Built.
BTW repti-rock, A reptile "aquifer" stone is LECA. Used it for a hydro set up and it worked wonders, planning on using it in the PMP.

Is this ill advised? It seems like it will produce the same effect. ( surface area for water with a little bit of absorbency )

I left about 3/4 inch air space between substrate and lid. My myc is growing pretty thick on top its about to touch the lid I'm a little concerned with contams wicking from the filter on the lid.. So idk what is the recommended amount of space that should be left between substrate and lid?

Contams won't germinate on your mycelium, they affect your substrate.

This is correct. There needs to be an air plenum above every substrate. With a flowhood, you can just lift the lid and inject or drop an agar wedge in. This is how I proof strains because brf cakes are so darned fast to colonize if made properly. RR
