Mycelium? or...something else?
    #17946200 - 03/12/13 08:43 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

So, this is my first time. I decided to go with (3) 8 oz jars, BRF to start off with, just to see if I can make it possible. Two of the three however, when they were boiling, had water leak in to them(I must've not screwed the cap on tight enough). I decided to spore all three anyways to see if they would make it. However, 3 days have passed and all I see is these white specks everywhere, and they don't look like mycelium. They don't look like mold either. I just..honestly can't tell. Hopefully this picture I upload(I'm using my phone) will be enough for someone to go by. It was the best picture I could take. If anyone could please help give me knowledge on what this is, if its a problem, and if I should just trash it and start over I would appreciate it.

You should also put tin foil over the lid, this will also help with keeping water out. 3 Days is not long enough really for mycelium growth, wait 1-2 weeks.

That is not mycelium.  I would pitch and start over.

I did use tinfoil, but sadly, it didn't hold back the water much(thanks for the help from my dad). But, do you think possibly it could be from the type of mineral water that I soaked the vermiculite in, and changed it and made it look that way as it boiled?
It looks almost like a white snot, or jizz. I couldnt explain it any better.
I think what I'll do is wait two weeks from now to see if it has changed at all.

If it looks "snotty" it's because it's soaking wet.
Or it's bacteria.
Either way, toss that shit.

I've never seen mycelium look like that after three days from a MS inoculation.  OP describes it as jizz or snot.. doesn't sound like mycelium either.

You are steam sterilizing them right? Just the way that is explained makes me think you are boiling the jars to sterilize and thats how they fell into the water.
At any rate, you didn't get too invested in this anyway, i'd pitch it and start over.
And the white specks I think is the rice, I noticed on mine that it becomes more pronounced looking over time.
A jizzy or snotty appearance leaves me at a loss for words.

I thought it just looked like wet rice and vermiculite. If it really does look like snot that's bad.

Hold the phone, since when are grains of rice part of the PF tek?

They could quite possibly be chunks of rice because I grinded it up in a brand new coffee grinder. I doubt that's it though, because I made sure that it was as close to flour as possible. Unless my grandpa didn't grind it down all the way(he ground a bit of grains for me), but I made sure that it was all flour quality, and not grainy.

Anyhow, you guys have given me the verdict to start over. Although you all have more experience, and I do appreciate the replies, I think I'll keep them stowed away in a temperature controlled room to see how they turn out and if things change for the better.

That's a four year old post
I always hydrate my cake mix and bulk substrates to field capacity. There should never be standing water in any mix, that is not field capacity.
With proper sterile technique and colonizing temperatures, it'll colonize fast enough to avoid any problems related to moisture.
I've also seen get better flushes than by dunking a dry-ish cake alone, but hey, that's just me.
