GE is absolutely essential during colonization. FAE is required during fruiting. But humidity of the correct level is also important, all throughout the life cycle. It's a balancing act.

Is this the way most people do things with mono-tubs or mini-mono-tubs these days?
I thought that while a tub was colonizing, it's best to tape all the holes shut and allow it to colonize with the air it's got stored in the box.

You say that you just leave it in a plastic bag and let it breathe a little fresh air once or twice?  Is that worth the chance of introducing contaminants?  If someone made a mono-tub or a mini-monotub shotgun style and taped all the holes shut for colonization, would you say they should take the lid off and give it a breath of fresh air sometime before fruiting?

No, when a monotub colonizes the holes should be taped and the lid should stay on until its 100%.

It's not really about letting contams in, it's about letting the co2 out and FAE in, FAE is a main pinning trigger and could make the tub pin early if FAE is introdused at the wrong time.

A fully colonized jar/substrate is for the most part contam resistant, so is a pasteurized bulk substrate, so contams should not be the problem.

A lot of people just let the imperfect lid of the tub provide the GE.

You want high co2 for colonization and FAE for fruiting.

I have questions for those who did this type of mini-mono hybrid.

how do you mix the spawn and the substrate without making a mess?

I did one yesterday and was talked out of mixing in the pasteurisation bucket so I did it in the FC. just as I expected it made a mess, it spilled tru the many holes and sticked to the side a LOT. had to wipe with a scott towel and didn't managed to get it 100% clean.

I'm thinking of using a bag and trimming the exces when done or do as I wanted and mix everything in the bucket and then just pour to taste.

how do yall do it?

I can't answer your question but why did you specify what brand of paper towel you used? For some reason that made me laugh so hard  :laugh2: .

I do not use these kind of tubs, I use regular monos, but the point is the same, and you nailed it, liners.

If you line the bottom with a thin and cheap trash bag liner, you can trim off the excess when your done mixing.

This accomplishes 2 things, for one it makes it less messy, and 2 it helps reduce/eliminate side pinning.

People used to think light was the cause of side pinning, so they taped the bottoms of the tubs.

But that is not the case, FAE hitting the sides causes side pins, so to eliminate them, use a trash bag liner that will shrink with the substrate, eliminating the microclimate and stopping FAE from hitting the sides of the substrate.

@notahacker: cool, lesson learned. it's just that doc-t said early in this thread that he likes this kind of tub better without a bag and I wanted to follow the "tek" exactly. it's my first time with grain spawn so I didn't wanted to fuck it up.

@kavince: lol, that's just how we say paper towel here. no matter what brand it is it's a "scott towel" just like any refrigerator is a "frigidaire" (french canadian slang for ya )

Some do skip the bag...I like to use one.  NotA nailed it with
that last bit: it sticks to the sub and shrinks with it.

:brilliant:

Take care,

should I consolidate or not?

it's been spawned monday evening and the coir is already quite colonized and nicely white looking.

I have a question, I'm using 50 50 horse manure/straw mix along with a casing, when you mist this do you directly mist the casing or just sides of the tub? Thanks!

Hi.
Sorry to reopen the thread. Thanks, to Doc T for the Tek, and everyone for their posts.

Has anyone experimented with a humidifier to get rid of the misting needs? Will that be effective?

I have read the thread and the only use to humidifier is to correct the RH in the room.

I know that Misting is cheap and fast and you will be check the tubs almost daily out of curiosity and contam checking anyways. But if having a humidifier with a timer will take care of the job, I am very keen to try that.

Also, where can I get more info on the use of wax paper Doc mentioned on this thread? How is it use? Pictures?

Regards and thanks again.

A humidifier is not a replacement for misting.

Even if it was, you would still have to manually fan out the chamber every time.

That being said monotubs are already fully automated.....there should be no need for misting or fanning until after the first flush.

This is why we "fine tune" the polyfill in the holes......

There seemed to be a lot of interest in this thing, so I figured I'd give it a thread of its own and some pics to show it off.

Here's the overview:
Tape (or paint) for bottom 4 1/2 inches, then drill 1/4" holes every 2". (Thanks RR!)

Did you put holes in the bottom too?  I see you have a towel underneath?

Do you think this will work for a scaled down box?

Hi everyone, I was originally going to post a new thread for this, but it seems Doc's thread has become a bit of a "mega-thread" for these mini-monos so thought it made sense to post here. If bumping an old thread like this isn't cool please let me know!

So after lots of fun with 28qt mini mono's done the standard way, I have tried one of these sexy hybrids. I recently put it into fruiting:

Now I'm happy for the most part but would love an experience opinion. The tub was in the same closet as a very small fan for a few hours. You will notice in the second pic, on the left of the fat pin in the foreground there is a tiny spot of blue. The general blue tinge in that photo is due to the lighting during the photo capture I believe, the sub looks pure white to me.

Also the pins looks unhappy perhaps? Dry/cracked looking stem and the white on the cap? I held off on misting because the surface had a lot of moisture when I put it in to fruiting, and although the photos don't show it well, there is still a little bit of small beaded surface water.

Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated, and again, I hope I did the right thing by posting in this thread.

Oh, also I was just interested in what you guys experienced with these hybrids thought of trying some pan cyans in one? Perhaps with plenty of fanning on a small pc fan in the closet?

Thanks very much!
