UPDATE:tried to sterilized bacteria
    #1793972 - 08/08/03 11:48 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

My friend has some jars, not yet innoculated. He boiled them for 1.25 hours in a large pot, and let them sit for a couple weeks. about a week after he left them sitting in a rubbermaid container, i smelled one of the jars, and it smelled kinda sour. All of the jars smell this way.  He thinks it might just be the brf fermenting, but i told him it might be bacteria. Who is right?  He just got the spores, and now needs to know if their is hope. I have no extra brf or vermiculite, so here is my question: if he actually pressure cooked the jars would the bacteria be DEAD. they are a little dry, so i am going to add some water and pc them for 1 hour and 15 minutes at 15 psi.  I just now got access to a PC, or i would have done that in the first place. Please help me help my friend! ps, i have grown before, and am helping him, as i am retired.    :oogle:

You can do that if you don't have more ingredients.
It could be yeast or bacterial contamination.

Yeah, you can do fractional sterilization with those. Boil for an hour, let them sit, and then do that again for the next two days. You want to be sure to germinate and then kill any spores that the infection might've dropped.

hey, i now believe it to be yeast, as it smelt of fermentation of cheap alcohol. I PC'd all 7 pints, and it reeked REALLY bad when i let the steam out. I innoculated, and the jars still smell like the contam, but i am guessin it is a by product. i have a couple questions:

1. Does the contam make that nasty smell, or is it the smell of a byproduct?

2. DO you think this fermented substrate will grow anything?

3. If the mycelium DOES in fact grow, is it still semi-safe to fruit off of?

4. Will this smell go away?

5. Can you give yourself a big hug for helping me?

thank you so much guys, without shroomery i would be nowhere(at least nowhere with shrooms)

1- Both.
2- No.
3- No semi-safes here, even if it grows i doubt it could develop mushrooms anyway.
4- With time, yes.
5- Done.
