What? People go to college to better their quality of life.

But I do agree that it's nearly impossible to achieve the "american dream"
unless you're busting some serious ass.

Life sucks, it's hard, and it'll fuck you given the chance.

But the best thing to do along the way is to use your brain and better your situation.

I can sympathize with people having a hard time, I've been through it.

But, I think it has to do a lot with personal responsibility, too.

You can't just expect a society to provide for you, you have to make shit happen.

like calling back prospective employers who say "we'll call you" and then they never do.

you have to play your cards right.  If you're too pushy they don't like that but some HR people appreciate it because they have to deal with so many douches daily--- if you can make a personal connection with an HR person it helps.

the squeaky wheel is the one that gets the grease

the bad leadership was my point in why a lot of people have done what they have.

its just not easy letting go of your dreams for some people. believe it or not we have the tendency to actually be too courageous. im not talking about denial here either.

you guys should be freelance audio visual guys. if you have any background in audio visual, audio mixers, setting up projectors, running wires, lighting knowledge for production. you can make your own rates...saying you knowledge and skills are backed

some of my friends whom are freelancers make their own rates, some guys get paid 300-400+ a day, depends.

but you can really bank.

my suggestion:

get into audio visual field

work with fun toys all day long

get contacts

make profit $$

A/V is cool if you have the means-- most people dont have the tools and experience to back that up tho.  I studied film and lighting and both linear and non linear editing in college and never did fuckall with it except make cool home movies.

now I operate heavy machinery.

I used to dream about being a rocker or a music video producer and you know what>???  fuckall that.

the film industry expects people out of school to work as interns for NO PAY or for a minimal stipend.  When I got out of school I didn't even have enough cash to move into a smaller storage unit let alone pay bills or stock a fridge.

I have no delusions of grandeur.

Computer science.  100% the best job opportunities out there right now and one of the best for the at least the next 10 years IMO.

Get a degree or get certified in something that's in demand and pays well.

Don't get some shit degree and waste your time.

In times like these it's all about credentials and experience.

this is what im changing fields too and going for, im thinking, or telecommunications. maybe the navy reserve if its unfeasible with my current and future budget.

although all this talk about syria, north korea, and china worries me if i go that route. i am no patriot and will basically be using the government for grants. im good at working with people i despise though. very adaptable... so...no problemo.

I wouldn't recommend telecom personally.  I worked in the industry as a test engineer for a couple years, it's incredibly stale and boring stuff.

That's some serious putting words in his mouth. Guy said get a degree or get some credentials. Never said get a PhD or a masters or even a BA or BS. I dunno what fucking world you live in, but "credentials" are usually required to have any kind of job building a house or fixing plumbing. I think you two are probably on the same page. Get trained to do SOMETHING and then do it.

Computer science is also in demand worldwide.  A good developer is worth a shitload right now.  There's literally not enough people to fill the positions that are available.  If you're competent, you're  guaranteed a good job basically.

while that statement is true right now, things will rapidly change.  People who are out of work right now and scrambling to do something to ensure their future are packing the comp-sci classes in droves.  By the time they graduate, employers will have their pick of the litter and can name the pay rate too.  This is happening in healthcare and construction right now because people were screaming for more nurses and hygienists about 5 or 6 years ago-- so everyone who needed jobs re-trained... now every time there is an opening for a specialist 500 people apply.  This happened to a family member.  Loan debt doesn't magically disappear-- and volunteer work (americorp, greenpeace, red-cross, etc) while it will afford people some respite it does not solve the problem.

I think statistics are interesting but sending thousands of people rushing off to retrain in other fields really isn't a good patch on the life-raft.

I have to disagree here for several reasons.

1) Computer science is MUCH more difficult than nursing or construction.  Frankly, anyone can become a nurse or a construction worker, many people are not cut out for computer science.

2) The world is become more and more computerized, not less.  This is only opening up more high paying jobs, and I can't see that slowing down for the foreseeable future.

actually, to be a licensed contractor legally you have to be certified through the state CCB.  The test is quite lengthy and requires you to know one's asshole from one's elbow... in addition to the legally required exam, a licensed contractor (finish carpenter, roofer, framer, painter, etc...) you'll have to carry insurance and be legally bonded.  the test and the bond and the credential costs over $1000 all told and must be renewed regularly, not to mention the OJT it takes to actually know enough to pass...  I have known knowledgeable and experienced carpenters who needed to re-test a couple times to pass  granted this may not be the case in every state

then they give you your card :credit:

that's for a contractors license

these would be subcontractors which in most states arent required to be
licensed and for some jobs liability and workers comp are required,
commercial installations and the like, most remodels, the home owner
rarely goes with a licensed contractor because it's a larger cost

I've never known a carpenter that was licensed unless he was also a general
contractor, in georgia the only required licenses other than general are
HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical and these allow you to pull permits and sign
off on the work for inspection
