why does humidity go down as temp rises?
    #1793447 - 08/08/03 06:50 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

i use a pf style fruiting chamber to clone wildflowers. i have noticed that when the lights on the terrarium go on the temperature goes up the rh has a tendancy to go down.
why is this?
for example a 7 degree rise resulted in the loss of 5% rh

whats the deal?

I'd imagine the heat from the light dries the environment a bit.

to put it simply .
air expands at higher temps . so more h2o is needed to raise rH .

rh = relative humidity. ie the moisture content of the air as a percentage of the maximum possible (full saturation). the amount of moisture the air can hold increases with temperature, thus the RH falls, even though the absolute humidity stays the same.

If you aren't already using one, try a simple, low-wattage flourescent light. These lights are "cool", as in they give off little to no heat, and are relatively inexpensive.

When it comes to lighting I follow a very simple rule of thumb, if you can see them then there is enough light.

If you pour a glass of water on the sidewalk when its 100 degrees outside it does what? it evaporates....RH is a measurement in how many grains of moisture is in a given amount of atmosphere ...You need a psychrometer to measure humidity which is a difference between the wet buld and dry bulb temp...thats why Mr. Carrier invented the Psych chart....

if you are in Arizona, and the temp is 120F and rH is 20%, what are the chances of your piss hitting the sidewalk ?
