Tyvex does not exist.
    #17930594 - 03/09/13 06:51 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hello. I am using RTV silicone to make self healing injection ports.

But now I need tyvek. The house tyvek is shit, and the post office dosen't sell tyvek envelopes for this.

My question:
http://www.lowes.com/pd_371722-968-14176/6LWS_0__?productId=3550714&Ntt=Tyvek%2Bpaint%2Bsuit&pl=1

Will that work for what I need?
How big do I have to make my hole, and should I put tyvek of the part that goes inside the jar or out?
Can i do LC with this, and finally, how often should i replace the lids?

I KNOW SOMEONE WILL POST HERE NOT OFFERING ME ANY GOOD ADVICE, SO I SHALL SAY THIS NOW.

I CANNOT GET SYRINGE FILTERS OR SYNTHETIC FILTER DISKS. IF YOU REALLY FEEL SO INCLINED TO TELL ME TO BUY SUCH PRODUCTS, PLEASE ALSO INCLUDE WHERE I CAN GET THEM IN CANADA. THE COMPANY SELLING MUST ACCEPT AMEX, AND THE SHIPPING FEES MUST BE REASONABLE.

That will do! or just go on usps site and order some tyvek envalopes.

https://store.usps.com/store/browse/productDetailSingleSku.jsp?productId=P_EP_13_C&categoryId=subcatMSS_International

You need a 3/8 hole in the lid.

Their website is not working properly, but thanks for the link.
I shall buy the one from lowes.

Am still awaiting for my other questions to be adressed, mainly, how many times can i use this? and which side should I put the filter on, if not both.

when using tyvek you want it between the lid and the band not the lid and the jar.

When buying tyvek paint suits you need to make sure its not laminated, i made that mistake with the second suit i bought, the lamination will melt to your jars / bands, and will allow no GE.

What do you mean?
I am drilling a 3/8 hole in it, and then cutting out a small circle of tyvek and RTV'ing it on the lid. Then there's the injection hole- a dab of rtv silicone.'

Are you suggesting i just cut a peice of tyvek as wide as my lids, put the id on with oles, put tyvek over then put the bands on?

Please be as specific as possible here, as I am very confused now...

Try a google search for "Canadian mycology supplies".  Very easy to find a good site with SFDs based in Canada.

rtv silicone is not as sticky as regular silicone and more expensive.  it is not necessary. EDIT: sorry i see now you are using them to make self healing injectin ports and the RTV will in fact be better for that but not as good at sticking the tyvek... when you buy the tyvek from lowes just buy a tube of 100% clear or white silicone caulk.  That will stick the tyvek way better.  trust me!  Drill a 5/16 inch hole and silicone the tyvek to the INSIDE of the lid, then silicone the lid and band together so they become one piece. It helps to scuff the lid with sandpaper to get the silicone to really bite.  It  is possible to also caulk it to the OUTSIDE of the lid.  Either way will work but I prefer inside.  Make the disk of tyvek large so you have enough surface area to caulk without interfering with the space around the drill hole

I know this is sort of aside from the point, but I've got two cents here so I might as well through them in:

I just got some big pieces of Eazy Felt at a local craft store for next to nothing. It's stiffened felt, not the soft kind--it's thick and has a wobble sound to it, you'll know it if you've got the right stuff. I haven't had any filter-related contam issues since switching to Eazy Felt, it really is awesome.

TUP just order like 12-20 SFDS from a vendor. Cut out quarter sizes and get plastic lids. Make the plastic lids once and you are set until you retire. No bsing with  remaking lids or replacing rusty ones.

This is what I use - nice thick tyvek, and it's HUGE.  Definitely enough to last for a few years. :omgawesome:

Good choice. now just follow this with plastic lids (remember to rough up the top with sand paper and bottom where the port will go) and then you have lids for life basically.

SFD are excelent and can be reused many many many times. Also if tyvek is unavailible you can just use polyfill as your filter.

Since you are using self healing injection ports, you could just punch another hole in your jar lid and stuff it with a little polyfill. Polyfill can be got at art stores etc. Its used for stuffing pillows and soft toys.

You could just take some out of an old pillow.

But you got SFD coming already
