It's hard to see what's happening there, but it looks like he hacked his dog a few times too...

and i'm a debby downer for staying strapped in the WOODS/forest/nature.
i live to close to real nature that i have stumbled on bears, deer, coyotes etc.
if a animal is staring me down and im armed and i can get to my gun im dropping what ever is in front of me and deal with the law later.
nature is still trying to kill you every second, just because we can read and make glass does not make us able to fight off even a mid sized wild cat.
you get a real apex predator like a grizzly, mountain lion or wolf in front of you with out a massive force multiplier(like a gun) your about to have a real bad time as you are eaten to death.
Most predators like their food warm so try to keep them alive and bears are known to mame and injure pray and put the 'meat' in a stash for later when its still alive but the bear is hungry).

panic sets in then anger and in that kind of situation you risk hitting the dog or letting your dog get taken in the real sense of the meaning.
tough call
i would swing as well, i'd rather my dog die in pain but in peace in my arms rather than it getting ripped apart.
some people might put themselves in the way in that kind of situation and one i fear we nearly saw.
for most of us our animals mean more than most humans so all means are on the table defending them/.

Yea I think the argument was never whether One could take a bear or a cougar without a firearm, if they decided to attack.
More that I hike in areas that I guess aren't considered "real nature".
Again, it's kinda in the same order of magnitude as knowing what seats in a commercial airplane maximize your chance of survival during a plane crash. You can pack heat in the wilderness and still get killed and eaten by a pack of feral pigs, I know some people who have had close calls in that exact scenario, and their firearm wasn't much help by the time they realized what was happening.
But if it helps you feel safe enough to get out there and enjoy the outdoors, more power to ya.

i live in upstate NY
i spent alot of time in the Adirondacks and there are A TON of bears there and they like because of food thrown out bears come in to towns.
i think the real problem is that what was once in the middle of nowhere are now suburban hiking trails.
Look at all the cats in California and they seem to be getting good at the very least sneaking up on people, how many people just went missing, unable to tell their scary encounter?
Alaska has one of the highest missing people anywhere in the US and has one of the lowest populations and largest distance between people.
In the Adirondacks i went out on the porch late at night and i was standing there listing to nature when i looked over and there was a bear so close to me i could have pet it.
we looked at each other, i looked at that bear in the soul begging it to let me go.
shit is scary when it's even a nice interaction.
Could be life and death

In the Adirondacks it was a black bear. Much less aggressive than grizzly. But they still get hungry. I would have been scared.

True, and just because I don't take flights in small bush planes over remote areas of Canada doesn't mean my commercial air travel won't crash in the middle of nowhere, leaving me to learn how to survive on my own until someone finds me or i hike out of there. That doesn't mean that I pack 10-20lbs of survival gear every time I fly home to see my parents.
Like I said, data is data. I don't live in upstate NY, or Alaska, and I've done my homework on the actual risk of being killed by the local wildlife, and weighed that against the cost of a firearm that I can conceal and will actually stop a bear, the likelihood of me being able to get it out of its location and fire in time to do any good, and the general hassle of carrying such a firearm through the range of federal and state lands that I travel through. I have made an informed decision about that, and accept that there is a non-zero chance of being killed and eaten by wildlife when I go outside.
You live in a place that you claim is crawling with danger, and claim to encounter wildlife at a much higher rate than I ever have in any of my outdoor activities in the lower 48. According to you, your specific situation is different, and your perceived risk of death when you go outside is higher than mine. You are making an informed decision to carry a firearm based on your perception of risk in your situation, and your threshold of acceptable risk. That's also perfectly fine.
There is no right/wrong answer here, I have my reasons and you have yours. I personally DGAF if you are convinced I'm going to be killed and eaten on a hike, just like you DGAF if I think you carrying a large-bore pistol on a small hike in Upstate NY is overkill and unnecessary. If you feel better and get outside and enjoy it, and you're fine with lugging a gun around, more power to you.
Why are we still talking about this, let's get back to posting pictures.

Sorry to hear that, glad your cats healing. Ive had a lot of cats and seen alot of cat injuries. I had a cat that used to get in so many fights hed have fist sized abcesses on his head and body that would pop and leave huge scabs but they would heal and grow over with new fur in like 3 weeks. Cats are insnsely resilient. This one i have now is really clever & territorial and gets violent with any cats who visit our place. Shes got the best life of any cat in the world and enjoys the snow, she has a heated bed through a her own private door, 24/7 food, running water and a whole 400 sqft room for herself

poor orange kitty
if they are a male there is a special connection(at least with me) and male orange cats, skinny, fat, young, old if i had a few 100 acres of land id take all the strays i could feed and care for responsibly
pretty much these abandoned animals via no fault of their own the human entrusted with their safety are put down quickly.
adopt your pets don't buy them, together we can end puppy and kitten mills.

fear is what got us out of the tree and using our first tool(fire).
Fear isnt always unwarranted, going to land or a trail that you don't own or go to the deep woods like extreme hunters or other winter sports.(snow shoeing is a sport)

I kind of wonder if bears are evolving. They have learned to forage in areas populated by humans. They have lost the fear of humans. So that's evolution. Now, if they get aggressive, they are likely to be shot and killed. So this means only "gentler" bears will be around. These gentle bears pass on their genes. Do this for a few hundred years, soon we will have bears who would make good pets like dogs.

Only Wolves to be concerned with(typically), are the lone Wolves. They have been kicked out of there packs for a any number of reasons. Now there desperate, scared, most of all hungry(pack hunters now trying to hunt alone with out success). This makes them act unpredictable and take many risks otherwise not taken.

You've convinced me, I'll take your advice, go drop most of my rent money on a pistol that can stop a bear, and anytime I see another human coming towards me in the wilderness, I'll drop them first and worry about the law later.
Thanks for talking some sense into me.
