I was in South Florida on that day - caught the last shipment of airplanes out of the northeast and flew parallel to the hurricane. Even though I wasn't up north to experience the landfall, I fucking felt that horrendous pressure system for the better part of that following week in the form of awful awful migraines, the seas were so rough until like Tuesday-ish, and I had to wait until then to go out and dive the keys. The only time I got relief from those migraines were underwater, strangely, probably because low pressure systems fuck my shit up and pressure is much stronger under water and balanced me out . Spent the whole week sleeping, glued to the news to keep and eye on friends up north and my dad who was staying with my 83 year old grandmother throughout the ordeal, thank god, the power outage alone would have been bad news for her if he was not there.
I was amazed at how huge the storm system was. Flying down to Miami was hell on earth in terms of pain..and turbulence.

That is a crazy story PB. I believe sandy had the lowest recorded pressure of any weather system since the US started recording weather data in 1885 (or 1895. Don't remember right now) I bet those migraines must of been hell since you feel it when the barometric pressure drops. Must of been an amazing sight seeing the storm from over 20,000 feet tho. Here's another picture from that day, the only real effects we received here were really bad coastal flooding for a week or so. (This was the biggest swell we've had in South Florida in over 20 years):

Yeah, the weather was pretty beautiful the whole time (well, according to everyone I talked to down there, it was chilly lol.) Even after the storm the visibility wasn't super great and there were not so many fish out on the reefs, but I was down there more for the wreck diving so it was cool. The water was really pretty warm, I felt very comfortable in a 3ml even at 110 feet lol.
I did actually have a window seat, but I didn't see the storm. Any source of light made me feel like puking at the time so I had to keep my window shut. I'm glad it was a short flight haha.
