Casings and humidity
    #1792721 - 08/08/03 05:41 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

My pit bulls recently decided they were tired of fanning 4 - 6 times per day.  So they went on down to the local mart and got themselves a cool mist humidifier, which they hooked up to their terr. via an everyday garden hose.  The hose fit perfectly into the ouput of the CMH, and the other end was put through a hole in the side of the terr. and then sealed with silicone.  The CMH was then plugged into a timer which lets it run for one hour on then three off and repeat.  However they did not remove the perlite yet.  They have a cheapo hygrometer but when Rh is above 90%, it just reads as HI.  The casings don't look over saturated.  Is this too much for casings?  Should they remove the perlite?  Will six hours a day be enough from the CMH alone?  Thanks. :smirk:

well, i'm no pro. but to get the ball rolling for ya, my 2 cents: the cool mist is there mostly for air exchange. it also humidifies, as a bonus. casings make their own humidity, though, so after they pin, i'd say yes, remove the perlite. for pinning 100% is ideal.

wait for a second opinion from someone wise who is online now - like dog, for example.

I disagree -- the casing provides the moisture so there is no reason to humidify the air around it; just don't let too much water evaporate from it -- covering it solves this.

Too much humidity is asking for contamination; I've never had a problem at 70-75%.
