Perspective and greater good.
    #1792320 - 08/08/03 03:51 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I'd like to say that while saddm did kill many of his people were there not kurds and shites that wanted to overthrow his government and plunge the country into civil war?
Is it a possiblity that in saddams mind, those deaths were for the greater good? ...however misguided that may be?....mabye it was strategically better,...kinda like how americans justified hiroshima. How many would have died in an iraq with no goverment with three extremist parties willing to do whatever it takes to eliminate each other.....?

I guess my point is the reality of the situation matters little when people believe they are doing the 'moral thing'...or for the 'greater good'....and how all that, is only a matter of peoples perspective as morality does not exist. But thats how people have justified war and conflict for as long as we can remember,...

just some thoughts...

I don't think so man. Saddam killed pretty indescriminantly. He even had both of his daughter's husbands offed. Basically, anyone who crossed him at all got it.

The 20th Century saw the widespread application of political solutions designed to promote "The Greater Good." This resulted in the bloodiest century in human history. I do not find it an acceptable justification.

 ha, ok no debate there....he prolly did it to secure his own postion and power, but what if that was the greater good....the alternative being worse!...how bad would it have been if the country lost its government?...i imagine you'd soon have war khans, and numerous warring factions...in a smaller sense saddam was doing a similar thing to what america did.  And that was to eliminate the threat that would destroy the peace of the region.  In saddams case it was his country, and in americas mabye they felt he was a threat to the middle east....or the homefront....

Im not sure if the people in power believe that or not...mabye its just to convince people to back them while thier motives are purely selfish. I can't see bush invading because he truly believe he does gods work, or that its for the greater good....no matter how self delusional i think he is.
