k heres the deal....I have access too pretty much fresh cow shit(with straw already in it) and I was wondering how long you have too let it age or how too compost it so you can use it.....or can you use it pretty much straight outta the cows ass? I have been messing around with bought composted manure but have not been impressed with the results so far....I had a pile of the fresh shit sitting outside....but it got rained on and is actually growing some type of mycelium right now(pretty sure its some type of mushroom since its pure white) so I'm thinking maybe its ok too use....it def still has some smell to it tho....so I wasn't sure cause I've heard it shouldn't smell like shit when its cool when your gonna use it...I'd appreciate any info I have not been able too find a FAQ explaining how to compost or age dung and came up empty with a search

let it dry out completely. some say wait until it grows a whiteish bacterium like a powder. then use it with any of the bulk methods in the FAQs or the nook.

Sun drying is the best.

that depends on the weather. a sunny day in arizona will dry it out a lot faster than an equally sunny day in florida because of the humidity. but, expect it to take at least two days. it also helps if you break it up and mix it around every few hours.

My friend gathers horse turds that have spent months under the sun, but I imagine that once the shit is dried to the point of crumbling that it's ready.

ok thx for the help...one last question....after its been completely dry whats the smell like? I'm planning to pasteurize in an oven.....and really hope it don't stink too bad.....the composted dung I had you couldn't even smell until you opened up the pot after it was done...and I'd just leave it outside for a couple hours cause I couldn't take the smell in the house

Well dried dung does not smell bad at all while it's pasteurizing, not nearly as bad as the composted manure my friend once tried.
He did a batch on the kitchen stove last night and his wife in the next room did not even notice.

i've found that it should be completly brown. Even though it is 'dry' it will still be green on the inside... break those up and let them dry more. It's actualy good to break the clumps up when thier still moist.
i've noticed that it dry's faster on concrete than on cardboard, concrete practicaly sucks everything right out.
Your house will probly fill up with a strong smell when pasturizing (stove top, unsure of oven), but wont smell like actual shit... smells like a strong dirt almost. That's been my experience's...

I dried for a while today since it was nice and hot....I just had it on the grass but tomorrow if its sunny I plan to put it out on concrete...some of it has gone grey....some is still brown/green but it feels dry.....I plan too keep it out till it all has that greyest colour...still has a slight poo smell but its not bad so far

No one has had good luck with store bought compost? Like Home Depot compost? I'm trying some right now, it seemed to be to wet after pasturizing.

well I tried some that wasn't leeched and it stalled.....then I tried some leeched with vermic.....its growing but slowly....it looks to me more like mycelium going through a casing layer than colonizing....but maybe thats just the way it is with dung.....I won't know till its done I guess

yes i have found that the longer you can let it dry the better. But at least wait untill its dry the whole way through. I hate the waiting game!

kramer has had good results using "paygrow" brand compost it has a lot of wood chips in it but pesa, combodian, and ks eat it up and flush to no end off of it.

well I'm pasteurizing the poo right now....I let it soak in cold water for a lil over an hour before pasteurizing in the oven....was weird tho cause only a few good sqeezes seemed to get it too field capacity after I took it outta the water....I'm thinking its most likely from the straw(about %50 of it)....I read in another thread its good to soak for 24hours before pasteurizing but I only had a small window of oppurtunity today...hope this turns out ok
