Fruiting question
    #1791356 - 08/08/03 09:59 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I have just moved my first crop (p. cubensis 'equador' on cased rye grain) to a terranium to fruit (plastic bin with perlite), the mycelium has broken through the casing layer about 12 days ago, but has not started to pin. I know guides say 5-15 days but I am a little concerned that the heat wave we have being having here in the UK (hard to beleive I know, I thought we had had summer, both days of it)
I have a max/min thermometer and hydrometer in the terenium (min 22 max 28) and 100% RH. I am fanning them 3 times a day to get rid of CO2.

Or more worrying is that I have used a hydrogen peroxide misting spray (5ml of 3% solution in 1000ml of pre-boiled tap water), it was cold when the peroxide was added, could this have affected the fruiting process?

Or am I just being impatient?

The bin is a a room with a window, they are just getting indirect sunlight from that. The temp is one of things that worried me, it swings afrom 23 to 28 decgrees C (thats about 76 to 84 F)

Right I will get a fluorecent, I was wondering about getting one of those blue/white tubes artists use, I read that they respond better to the blue end of the spectrum.

On the temperature control, I am not sure how I am going to manage that unless this heat wave goes, I have a crappy air-con unit that sounds like elephants mating while it is running, it will have to do.

And I am stopping using the peroxide spray, just pre-boiled water.

Hope this helps, it not I still have my culture as I transfered some grain spawn into new jars and it is colonising nicely, there is peroxide on the new jars, so I don't think its a peroxide tolerance problem.

Doh! I see you are saying its too cold, that would make sense, mushies are like reptiles, they slow down in the cold

I can stop using my elephant humping air con unit.

Thanks for the advice, I will let you know if it all goes well.

Thanks again

Doh! sorry about that, I will be happy to change if it bothers you, you were here first. I had a little problem with my first choice due to my email server being a bit facist about correctly formatted DNS MX records (<geek>which shroomery does not have, MX records should point to an A record not an IP address</geek>). So I did not check. But I have since told my email server to slacken off its jack-boots, but it has been good against spam.

dont worry about lights, you could have a candle burning, and the mushrooms would be fine...
its not like plants, they could care less about light so long as there is a little bit every day....

your temp ranges seem fine too....
im growing in about the same conditions...
just be patient
give plenty of fresh 02
and u will see pins soon..

Florescent light? WTF? The ambient light from the room should be plenty.
Over 85? That's for incubation. Not fruiting.
Do even know whet you are talking about diacamomo?

Psilomonkey, you should be fine. If you are worried about the high temps, you could always give them a cold shock. Hyperdermic gave you good advice. Just watch out for overlay.

Got them pinning now, Got the temp at 25c/76f, the problem was that the casing layer was too dry, there were some signs of overlay, but it was not well developed. And I hear cubensis is quite tolerent, so I gave them a good soaking and as if my magic pins appear!

As I mentioned in my earlier posts, we are suffering a bit of a heat wave here in UK, and most UK homes don't have aircon, so I have used a old portable aircon unit and built a poly sheet tent, as it is said "Duct tape is like the Force, it has a light side and a dark side and it binds the universe together"

Yes man, I live in Spain and am having big trouble keeping fruiting temps. You know, temp is getting to near the 45-48?C in some regions.
