Casing in tupperware
    #1791268 - 08/08/03 09:00 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

My buddy is casing a quart jar in tupperware.. His question is, after he prepares the casing material and he mixes in the colonized substrate, is he supposed to simply put the top on the tupperware container and leave it to colonize? How much head room is needed between the casing and the top of the container?

He needs to incubate it for a while first. I would not put the top on. Cover it with some plastic wrap, and poke a few holes in it so the casing can breathe some. My friend has his first true casing going in a smaller rubbermaid container and he noticed that with the lid on it got real wet in there. I think it needs to breathe a bit more than that. I could be wrong though.

My buddy is casing a quart jar in tupperware..

Paint or wrap the bottom and sides of the container in foil .

The substrate will try to fruit wherever it sees light. Unless you paint or wrap the bottom of the container in foil, light will penetrate it and the substrate will try to fruit on the bottom and sides as well as the top.
