The Book Of The Dead
    #1791172 - 08/08/03 07:25 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I read the book only half way. Can anybody explain me what it is about, besides the standard 3 levels of perception and some profetic and sincere messages?

Are you referring to the Psychedelic Experience based on the Tibetan Book of the dead? The book clearly explains what its about, you should read the whole thing.

I loved the book. It is based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, which is read to people that are dying. It describes the process of death and rebirth of the ego. In this books case it is aimed at psychedelic vogages. It is divided into 3 bardos. The first bardo is the period of ego loss or non game ectasy. Since most people aren't spiritually efficienty enough, this state doesn't last long at all, and you move into the second bardo, which describes the hallucinatory struggles. This is the state of being trapped in hallucinations of all sorts, I am sure you are familiar with this state. Finally the third bardo is the period of re entry into a bodily form. This is where you are comming down from a psychedelic experience.

Yeah no kidding. Leary really did a job on the 60's and 70's generation with this flip over the counter book. Leary's counter culture and turn on, tune in, drop out philosophies together with his 'question everything to the point off arrest' always had the right impact with the right people.
The psychedelic experience ended in the book of the dead. Makes sense when you think about it. Every cult figure of that period, or the godfathers of drugs, like I like to call them, all died of cancer...that's what the book is about.

Of course there are always people that wouldn't agree with these lines of mine. Those people usually have there own thoughts about most things, even when it's new to the author himself   these are the people that probably don't accept or apreciate this luminous, sharp and accurate, in principle surface analyses of mine concerning this book. Amongst them there is the loss of ego or non game existence, wich he writes about in transcendent lyrics. On the other hand ego tripping is nice, just not very social. There are more solutions to this problem however. Some people rise above other people because they have a stronger, more dominate character. When these people is returned to their own enviroment the specifics of this 'game tripping' changes in to a more dosile and following trip and becomes 'non game'. Did you have more revelations of this kind about the book?

The Introduction chapter in the beginning of the book gives you a pretty good summary.

That's quite a statement. I know Leary and McKenna died of cancer.
What other persons are you referring to?

Leary was 76 when he died, and Huxley was 69. When old people die of cancer it's generally an indication that they have managed to survive death by accident, violence, suicide, and heart disease. Hofmann is 97 and still healthy, 60 years after his first LSD trip. But I bet he'll die of cancer or heart attack some day.

McKenna was only 54 when he died from a very rare form of brain cancer. That's hardly typical.
