concerts?
    #17911284 - 03/06/13 12:44 AM (10 years, 10 months ago)

Anyone know of any upcoming concerts that have an atmosphere similar to what Greatful Dead concerts used to have, preferably somewhat closer to New York. I've read so many posts by senior members where they describe some amazing times they had at such venues back in the 70s and 80s and was wondering if such events still exist today

The key to catching that true atmosphere today (or any day) is not trying to find some shit that emulates decades ago. Watch music documentaries about any scene that interests you and realize the thing that makes the whole thing so fucking cool and appealing would have been being part of the scene the documentary is talking about, not chasing the shit 20 years later. You want the Dead go fucking see Furthur or Phil Lesh and Friends or some bullshit. You want something cool put in the legwork and find the scene that's happening now.

I mean, lots of people have better "family" than the Dead, doesn't mean it's shit worth writing home about. At least the Dead had some kind of legitimate social movement involved though. Bassnectar might make entertaining music, but so do countless other bands/artists touring now. If in 20 or 30 years Bassnectar is headlining major festivals then I guess we can have this conversation.

For the record I think the Dead are fucking terrible, but I can respect whatever impact they've had. Bassnectar? Not so much. Fucking cookie cutter electronica.

Proof enough to me you don't know enough about what you're talking about to be talking about it.

The amount of people that follow Bassnectar around on tour is insignificant. So what is it that I'm wrong about?

for the record, you are both wrong.
Primus is the new Grateful Dead because they are not only 'searching for the sound' but also do very hallucinogenic friendly concerts and jam as fuck.

Primus isn't a "new" Dead because they've been around for for like 25 fucking years and I would at least cite Claypool instead of Primus since he has so many amazing side projects.

But Primus is largely unlistenable and the majority of their music serves as little more than a showcase for Claypool's dubious talent of coaxing unusual sounds out of a bass guitar. Hardly my idea of a good time.

You called EDM a genera of music it's not even hardly related to.

Also, he's just getting started.
He's drawing a crowd, the message comes next.

I'm a picky person. If it helps, I think Bassnectar is an entirely different level of shit that makes Primus shine like a brilliant diamond.

wtf are you talking about?

I specifically used the term electronica because it's pretty catch-all and I really dislike getting into really broad electronic genre terms when it's totally irrelevant to the discussion. Beyond that EDM is fucking electronic or electronica, and Bassnectar falls into any one of those genres.

Secondly now you're just speculating. He's drawing in a crowd, which he has been doing for years and still not even managed to achieve anywhere near the popularity of a few other "electronica" artists that play very broad-appealing music and he still has no "message" to his scene.

I don't even know what the fuck you're trying to say. Look, Bassnectar is fun, I'd go to a show and have a good time. I'd listen to it on (very rare) occasion. Attempting to compare him to the fucking Dead is laughable. And again, this is coming from a guy who thinks the Dead fucking suck.

So maybe I'll be wrong, but until whatever "message" it is that's coming I'll continue to think you're the one who has no idea what you're talking about.
