Well, since you're asking my recommendation, it would be to just use sterilized water and do water transfer… This OMC calls it "GLC" in regards to the first people who posted using the method on here… others call it "slurry"… but those things on yet others refer to actually blending colonized grains in sterile water so I just call it water transfer. You use it just like LC except you have the benefit of it starting clean for sure, not expanding the mycelium further hardly, not getting your culture on eating sugar, not waiting for another grow-out period, so on so forth… The biggest advantage is that it has tons of tiny bits of mycelium instead of long thick strands like LC.
If I were to make LC today I would dilute grainwater until I could see thru it, so if it went hazy I'd know there were bacteria. Then I'd add the normal recipe of malt extract, or use a bit less in addition to some other sugar like Karo or honey… but mostly I wouldn't make LC. Bacteria havens, those.

I assume contams will make themselves known by the time of harvest?

Likely, but not assuredly. Depends on when the contamination would start to take hold. If it's no slight contam it'll flare up obviously and your mycelium won't get to fully colonize. If your mycelium colonizes though and a contamination pops up in the mix, it may take weeks/months to start to grow in strength and size if it does it at all but it's likely to really reduce the sclerotia formation in the surrounding area.
Since I inoculate with grains, and use enough to where I don't have to break-up colonies in order to reach full colonization evenly and quickly, I'm not able to tell when contams pop up in the late stage of colonization. Once or twice when I was using mixed lids a small patch of weak Trich sat on the top of the grain, must have been there most of the time. There were very few stones in the top half except pressed against the glass.

Violet, just wondering why you did not mention that stones will grow when they are spawned to bulk like one would do with cubensis. Stonesun spawns his grains to bulk once full colonization occurs to a monotub. He mentions that while colonizing in the monotub stones form, so when the monotub is ready to harvest, he harvests both the fruit bodies and the stones. Just wondering what your two sense is on this.

I did mention the second round of stones in the guide at the end of the mushroom growing phase
Quote:
Violet said: Don't forget the other stones too! That's right, underneath the casing layer there are new truffles that form and grow much more quickly when in fruiting conditions than invitro. Any sclerotia left in the grain when laying it out in the tub will have grown larger as well.
In colonizing bulk substrate, they don't form stones until well after fully colonized, just like invitro. Good reason to let them flush mushrooms as long as they can - get those extra truffles fat and strong!
That's another reason I like to do straight grain as well...

Let the haters hate, I thought this was a great post. I have been wanting to move on to some exotics and I have added this to my bookmark. As soon as I get some rye I'll order the print and follow your methods.

So i didnt make an lc. I also have yet to make up a better batch of petris more suited for tamp. I'll get to that in a few days.
I noc'd up 2 jars with an agar wedge about 5-7 days ago. Very little growth. I thought that it would grow faster than it did on agar when i introduced it to grain.
I'll take some pics tonight to further elaborate. Any reason for the slow growth? Is this species a slow grower?
Thanks for the help and sorry for the noob questions, its my first crack at stones

I've not had Tampanensis (tho again I'm quite open to trying them) so I can't say for sure. I indeed have heard some peeps say before that Tamp seemed to be notably slower, but cannot recall for sure if they meant in general or either colonizing or stone formation.
It's always possible that you've got slow genes… when you make new petris try some more spores on them and see if it's any different.

what sub would you recommend if I did choose to spawn the jars to bulk?

I'd always recommend pure coir. It's such a nice substrate… I seldom use it, it's not worth the money compared to that same cash on grain, but if you're the "bulk" substrate type of person then use coir for stone producers. It's a totally food-grade sub; in addition to being grown from it, sclerotia get the substrate all over them unlike mushrooms.
If you choose to use compost or manure is one thing, your choice, enjoy eating/sharing dirt or shit.
But DO NOT use vermiculite if you plan to eat those truffles.

That is a good point about the grain and coir prices. Ill probably just spawn the grain. Thanks for the help as always.

I just spawned 2qt of ps. galindoi spawn to a small mini mono of straight coir. Harvested some of the stones to dehydrate and grind up into chocolates..

-------------------- Be sure to NOT leave lids loose on grain jars. Any air exchanges that occur as the PC cools will allow contaminants to possibly slip around the filter disk or tyvek as opposed to passing through it. -RR

Love the grain prep idea, I've been using it very successfully with my cubes. Saves time and nuisance boiling and not to mention the grains don't explode when you do it that way. Brilliant stuff.
