Changing encoded mp3 volume
    #1790497 - 08/08/03 12:19 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I know one of you computer geeks has got to know how to do this. Here's the deal. I'm making mp3 mixes with Traktor DJ but a lot of the mp3s are encoded with either too high or too low volume. The autogain feature in that program doesn't normalize the volume level as well as it should, so I'm looking for some method or some program to change the encoded volume levels of the mp3 files so that I can set them all the same. I searched on Google but all I found was some crap about playing mp3s on Linux. Anyone have any ideas?

Do a Google using the term "normalize mp3's".

There are several programs out there. I had one, can't remember which right now. It worked fairly well, not perfect.

If memory serves it was called mp3 doctor.

It's not a speedy process as it converts from mp3 to wav and the back again.

I have used mp3 doctor before as well and it is OK. I like mp3gain a lot better though. It works very well. My friend told me the new Windows Media Player will normalize them as well. He also says it has a nifty quantizer as well. I have not checked it out yet though.

Thanks. mp3 gain is free, mp3 doctor is 22 bucks. I'll try it.

My mp3 doctor was a bootleg and I don't seem to have it anymore.

No problem. Anyone try the WMP thing yet? I think it is in the latest version.

I always used Acid to change the volume of mp3s. That's all I really used it for.

You shouldn't re-encode an mp3 just to adjust the volume!!!  Sure, it will work, but it will take away some of the quality, and takes a fair amount of time.

MP3Trim is a program designed to adjust the volume of mp3's, without the need to re-encode.

Unfortunately, the freeware version will only work on files less than a certain size... among a few other nuisances.  But if one is so inclined, it shouldn't be much of a problem to locate a full-version of it.  Or you could purchase it

mp3 gain doesn't do that. Here is the website. He explains it all pretty well.

Use RazorLame to encode your mp3s. I have yet to find a program that encodes with better quality and I have never had a problem with volume levels.
