    #1789675 - 08/07/03 08:25 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

These were absolutely huge! each mushroom is 10 - 12 inches across
they were found this past spring in Connecticut. I looked in a field guide but couldn't find anything close. Any Ideas?

Looks similiar to a fungus I found a while back.

ToxicMan ID'd it as Meripilus sumstinei. Dunno if its the same thing or not, I'm no expert. Nice pics!

those are two different fungi.

chunder's fungus is a pollypore, characterized by it's shelf like growth and the fact that it's sporulating surface is comprized of small tubes called pores.

the fungus squid posted is a gilled shelf fungus. i am not overly familiar with these fungi but i can try to narrow the field down a bit.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

it does appear to be two different species in that last pic.

squid: can you tell me what kind of trees those are?

i won't rule out Pleurotus sp. but i won't suggest it yet either because i just don't know yet.

Awesome find! Great pix, too!

Too bad you didn't get a clone going of that. I bet somebody would want it for cultivation. You should keep the spot in mind and see if you can find some there in the future.

I'm pretty sure those are a Pleurotus species. The unusual shape is interesting. Is it an odd strain of Pleurotus ostreatus or is it a new species?

Definitely, if you see them again, get some specimens.

Happy mushrooming!

Hi Squid,
The top photos look to me like Pleurotus ostreatus also. Look for a white or pale lilac sporeprint. This is my favorite edible. They sometimes smell of anise, and really make my mouth water! There are a few different species of these with subtle differences, all edible. There is P. popularis, and P. pulminaris. I just pig out on all of them, and I don't bother to try and figure out which is which. Just be careful not to eat a Crepidotus, which are usually much smaller and have a brown spore deposit.

The one by your foot could be a Berkly's Polypore(Bondarzewia berkeleyi. Those will bruise black, and will also turn your fingers black (a delayed chemical reaction) and it will not wash off. It's an edible, but is very tough unless you get a young one and only eat the tips. To me, it's not worth the stained hands.

Nice Photos!
I wish I could post some of mine but I am too computer illiterate, and I don't have any web pages to link to.
