natural resources.
    #1788369 - 08/07/03 02:26 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

why are natural resources not 'owned' collectively? what gives any one human being a right to claim land as theirs?

crude oil is worthless to human beings when it's sitting undergroud, and i say that a company that pumps it out of the ground and refines it has every right to the profits they make.

but it seems wrong that something like land, which is often worth its worth just sitting there like it is, can be just snatched up and claimed by a human being as money for nothing.

if we were all suddenly stranded on an island, would the first person to say, "i own this island. i claim it all as mine" be the rightful owner of it? could he charge the rest of us rent to stay there? how do we deal with natural resources fairly?

These are goods points to ponder. Have you read any of Henry George's ideas on the subject?

It all depends on the system of government I guess. In some places the state owns everything, while in others most land is privately owned. Here in Texas most land rights came from claims made back when the land was settled. Actually here in Texas owning land, does not necessarily mean you own the mineral rights to the land as well. Generally this is laid out before you make a purchase of corse. For example, my grandfather owns about 1,000 acres of land, but does not own the mineral rights. The owner of the mineral rights has a couple of pumps on my grandpa's land. This was all understood when he bought the land though.

The force to make others accept it. Its an illusion....no body 'owns' anything really.
