Plastic Vs. Metal - (Mason Jar Lids)

So, which do you prefer and why?
I have over 100 RTV lid's I've created myself- both quart sized G2G and regular mouth PF tek style jars.
I've had great results with both, but the tyvek has been PC'd about 2 or 3 times, and I'm ready to make permanent jar lids with legit SFD's I ordered a few weeks ago. Recently I obtained 48 wide mouth plastic lids, and 40 regular mouth plastic lids-

I originally purchased the Wide-Mouth plastic lids because I figured they would make G2G transfers much easier considering there is no metal band or lid to peel off each jar. But that got me wondering- Would plastic lids make the jar more vulnerable to contams?? There is no rubber seal on the plastic lids to secure the lid down around the jar lip- that's why I'm concerned. Also- How durrable are plastic lids? How many time's can I PC and re-use them before they begin to degrade?
Basically- which is better, and why? Plastic or Metal? I have both, and plenty SFD's and RTV to make about 60 more grain jars.

I bought a bunch of the plastic lids and I found that they are nice to look at and I sometimes have problems with them trying to open them when they are wet from alcohol spray and wet gloves. Other than that I havent had problems with them yet but I have only been using them for a short time so this is about all I can add for you. As far as peeling the lids off of jars, I flip the lid so it never gets that seal that you have to peel it off. I have short finger nails and it hurts sometimes trying to pull those things off of the jars.

I like metal better. Plastic are a PITA, IME. You have to get the rubber gasket for the lid to actually seal to the jar. They're harder to drill, slip more & don't tighten as snug as I like my jars.

What do you mean? I've been using the same lids for years. The only thing that really goes bad is the rings. Those, I use to line my PC for sterilizing bags.

I notice rust on the lids after PCing and just dont trust them to use over and over. I suppose its fine but I dont like the idea of rust in or around my jars.

Rust doesn't hurt anything...all my lids have spots of rust, but once you sterilize it, it is sterile rust, so

The regular mouth PP5 lids some of the sponsors sell are great, but only come in regular mouth The regular and wide mouth plastic lids Ball sells at stores (in 8 packs) for their canning jars are prone to cracking, warping and as was already mentioned, require a gasket for an air/water tight seal, but they'll do the job.

So, I'm guessing the general consensus is, use my SFD's and RTV on Metal lids instead of plastic if my goal is to make a generally longer lasting, more reliable lids?

That's what I'd recommend.

You're not suppose to seal the jars.
In fact, when using micro pore tape as a filter, the lids need to be left cracked abit for ge or they'll stall out. Leaving the lid cracked has never caused me any contamination issues, as long as its tightened inbetween shakes.
Those plastic lids are easier to melt holes in, thats the only upside.

I use both. I use the ball plastic lids most lately and like the fact that you open & pick up one single piece. It's convenient. I've heard of folks having troubles but so far I've had none.
