when i make a substrate will this be sufficient...

i have 6 half pint and 2 one pint jars but i only have about 3 cups of verm and 2 cups of brf. i want to do all 10 jars and after the first time i noticed that there's quite a bit of extra substrate after mixing. since this substrate is in the 2:1:1 ratio with water, will it be okay to use the excess to fill the jars? this setup is based on volume if i remember properly, right?

???? I don't really understand the question. As long as the substrate was made properly it should work regardless of the volume (as long as it doesn't dry out) but I don't see the point of doing all the extra work. If you are asking about filling the jars to the brim, don't do it -- it's better to be safe and put some dry vermiculite on top before P.C.'ing. If there's substrate on the tippity-top of the jar airborne spores will probably land there and germinate.

I think what omniscientlore was asking is if he can use previously mixed substrate to supplement his meagre supplies, in which case the answer would be no because by this time it will be full of bacterial spores, and would be contaminated even after pressure cooking.
...if that is what he was asking

depends how long since you made the substrate. if you just made it then go for it, but if you've been keeping it for some time then the chance for contams is high and so is wasted time.

If you're not going to use the substrate right away it should last a little while covered in the fridge.
Best to use it right away.

If you pressure cook ANY contams will die. If you steam in a pot, I'd be more careful. I don't understand your qestion about volume.

This isn't strictly speaking true... bacterial spores that cause contams like wetspot can survive pressure cooking, and then germinate once the jars have cooled down.

Okay, you're right. But this is usually only a problem with grains. If it's just brf and verm he should be fine with a good pressure cooking regardless of how much bacteria is in his mix. Plus, if it's already wet, like his post seems to imply, then any bacterial endospores will have already germinated. Strictly speaking though, you are correct.

Kind of, but not really. They can survive pressure cooking for a short time. If you want to be sure everything's dead and that you've gotten everything up to PC temps, give the jars an hour or an hour and a half, and that should kill everything except for deep-sea thermophiles.

what i mean with the volume is, say i prepare the substrate using 3 cups verm, 2 cups brf and 2 cups h2o, as per the pf tek that's enough for like 4 half pint jars. after the first go around i noticed that there's an extra amount of substrate. can i use this excess amount? i'm assuming that i can even though the volume isn't the same but the substrate amount is in the parts of 2/3 cup verm and 1/4 cup brf and 1/4 cup water.

I don't think even deep-sea thermophiles would survive 250F for one hour. The critters that live down there don't actually live in the super-hot water; they live in the periphery where the temperatures are much more moderate.
