old cakes need moisture

Ok, here is the story:
A friend cooked up 7 pints of BRF substrate, and had some complications getting spores. He sterilized them in a pot of boiling water for a little over an hour. This was about 3 weeks ago, and the jars are not contaminated, but are getting a little dry. They were left with the lids on tight. He is going to be able to use a pressure cooker in about a week, when he expects to have the spores, but he is almost out of verm, and wants to use these jars. He thinks maybe he could boil them in a pot with no lids on the jars, to make some steam get moisture into the jars. Would this work? also, he did not use a top layer of vermiculite, do to the shortage(and is now glad). The sustrate is still clumped together, and stays together in the jars if you turn them. Can you help me help him? thanks for your help, I know I screwed up. :smirk:

why would your friend make the substrate for the jars and sterilize them 4 weeks before getting the spores? If your friend is going to get a pressure cooker in a week and he is going to re-sterilize them then I would dump all the substrate out of the jars into a bowl then mix in more water till it start to yield water when squeezed then put it back into the jars and then re-sterilize them then inoculate the jars after they cool to room temp(about 3-4 hours)

He was supposed to get the spores from his brother, but he never came through. before I re mix the substrate, do you think its neccesary? wouldn't the steaming proccess work? I am probably going to end up doing what you said though. Sounds like a lot more work , but I may just end up having to do it.  Thanks for the help, I didn't even think about that! I appreciate it, and any other input someone can give me, that involves less work, as I am getting lazy. Maybe its just the weed?

you may be able to get away with taking the top off all the jars and then mist them all but it's hard to tell if you have enough water or too much but that is something esle you can try if you don't want to go through all that work of taking the substrate out

thanks again. I hope thats ok, i don't believe too much moisture could escape tightly closed jars. I also have them storing in tupperware
