perlite

my freinds jars of ecquadoran are colonizing, and this is his first grow. He wanted to get something cleared up about the terranium setup before the birthing. if he lays perlite on the bottom of the terranium, does he still need the drip sheild? would he need to still spray the tank?

spray the sides. Get a drip shield if you want but don't stress it. Extra money adn with the perlite and occasional spraying you'll be drenched in humidity. this is all if he is planning on keeping them as cakes that is.

You don't even need to spray. My friend had perlite in his grow chamber and kept at 99% constant. Plus a fish pump going for air exchange.

yeah with perlite you don't need to spray to keep the humidity up.I don't hear about anybody using drips shields any more.To give the cakes air exchanges just simply hand fan 3-4 times a day with a book, sheet of paper ect..

Yeah psilocybin_monkey I was thinking the same thing with drip shields. That's probably the first time I've seen them mentioned here.

If a terrarium was built with a fan blowing air into or indeed out of the terrarium that was on, say, five minutes every hour, would this be sufficient for air exchange, and would this cause the perlite to dry out to quickly?

My friend used an air pump under the surface of the perlite, this worked fine and didn't dry it out at all. My friend thinks fans are highly excessive and BEGGING for problems. That's just an opinion based off my friends experience though.

Right, cheers dude... I think I'll rig up a small version and see how it goes, but your friend may well be right.

I'll holler back

AFOAF has had to spray on a few rare occasions, but that's an exception, not the rule. You don't really need a drip shield, either.

Yeah, that's far too much air exchange, IMO.  I'd either submerge air bars under the perlite, or put a cup full of water with some H2O2 on each side of the container and run an air stone in each of them.  This isn't quite as good as the air bars, but it works pretty damned well.   It's also enough to take care of all of the air exchange in most terrariums.  You don't even need to cut exhaust holes -- it just comes out through the imperfect seal with the lid.
