considering casing
    #1785958 - 08/06/03 07:40 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

So, this one guy my friend knows has some PF jars a-colonizing (6 Gulf Coast, 6 B+) and he's thinking of casing two or three of them. Bearing in mind that the B+ jars aren't doing too well, and he has no dealer hookup so it's important that he get a few doses worth out of this, and that he hasn't cased before (he has fruited from cakes), what would be the best tek to use?

Additionally, unless it's really necessary he doesn't want to buy a new rubbermaid... is there a ratio of number of cakes to container size he needs to be aware of?

I've seen that, I'd like some opinions and/or recommendations so an informed choice can be made.

the 60/40 coir verm tek seems to be one of the favorites. My friend uses it to great success. Although if I were you I would PC the casing mixture instead of microwaving. There has always been contam problems for my friend when he microwaved it. Although a lot of people here have no problems... IMO.

My friend just made his first 60/40 casing. Hopefully the microwave was enough. It was hot as fuck when he took it out of there. His first straight verm casing never contamed even though he just poored it on straight out of the bag. This prolly just means he has been lucky so far though.

The 60/40 coir/verm tek looks very promising assuming this guy can find some coco coir. If he's casing two or three cakes, how big of a container should he use?

pure coir always worked well for my donkey when he was a newb. it never contaminates and colonizes and fruits very quickly., using a layer of moistened and sterilized verm at the bottom is also good. throw moist verm in the microwave for 8 minutes stirring every two.. worked very easily for my donky.

case with straight verm or 50/50 in a small rubbermaid container, use the lid when incubating then put a Saran Quickwrap poked all over with small holes (use an empty syringe). works great.

Alright, although I feared there'd be difficulty with this, the guy found some coco coir quite easily. The only thing still bugging him is that the 60/40 tek contains no measurements - he's assuming that he's to use 60% verm and 40% coco, but he doesn't know how much of the stuff to mix up.

Well, 6 parts verm to 4 parts coco.  How much are you making?

I believe the current plan is two cakes in a bread-baking pan. I think I can work out how much to use... but is that 4 parts expanded coco, or 4 parts compressed?
