I just got a 10 year pan print to germinate on agar.
It was sealed in glass and kept in a cool basement and then a fridge for the last two years.
Alittle blast from the past

My first grow ever was with a 6 year old spore syringe. It hadn't been kept in special storage (a plastic bag in various rooms in the house), I'd guess it sat in temps ranging from a low of 55 to a high of 86.
I fluked my way through innoculating, birthing it as a bacteria contammed cake, and fruiting it. I wish I'd took a spore print of it's fruits, because they bruised blacker than the ace of spades. Being a total novice, I thought it was pretty normal, but now I know it wasn't (although it probably wasn't anything rare).
So if a ham fisted first time grower can make a 6 year old spore syringe fruit, I'm sure it's not that special an achievement.

I'm not sure why all his thoughts/opinions/experiences are considered concrete fact to you.

I always find it funny when people quote RR like a christian quotes the bible!!! Common, his name is Roger Rabbit!!!
I'll admit, the guy is VERY smart and know way more than I do overall about mycology! However, he has told me personally that the way I do things won't work and will contam every time. And yet here I sit today with 2 years of experience doing things almost the opposite of him, and getting better results than when I tried his methods.
Just saying, if RR says something then yeah, most likely it's a good thing to try, but he is in no way the god of mycology...

I've successfully germinated and grown out from a 15 year old domesticated (mutant) Ps. cyanescens print that was stored in glass (with a lot of other heritage prints) in a fridge the entire time. That was after soaking for about a month in sterile water, there was low germination at that point, but I got a couple of dikaryotic strains out of it. The fruits I got on grain were nothing special though and they stalled out small, so I never went to anything else with that attempt nor did I bother to post anything about it...
After extended soaking though (many months, 6 or so) I got dense germination the last time I tried these (early last year). The original strain was a complete TKO so I'm hoping to reestablish it. Here's some pics of the FIRST growth on agar, there are two distinct strains in this pic and they're fighting it out for territory.

And a thread on that from back a ways (sorry most pics deleted).
Here's a an agar plate where that more recent version pinned out (put away and ignored, slated for demolition on account of a hyperspace bypass I need to install):

It can be done, but from what I've read cubensis spores don't have this kind of lifetime typically. Still...give it a shot. Extended soaking works wonders, pure water won't support contam growth.
Ehm, I'll welcome everybody who wants to argue what the spores actually are or aren't as well, as I grew this strain out in mass for several years after a thermal runaway in my garage fridge "fruiting chamber" produced an altered mutant strain from what was perfectly ordinary ps. cyan. Potency was immense, it was my far-and-above favorite strain until I quit cult and mushrooms cold for about 10 years. Hence the continuity gap.
tl;dr 15 year old spores can be germinated successfully.

It's a well-known fact that spores last far longer when suspended in distilled water than on paper prints. For someone so bold as to suggest the experience of others comes from where the sun doesn't shine, I'm surprised you didn't know that tidbit of basic cultivation.
When I said there's virtually no chance his spores are viable, that's just what it means. It doesn't mean NO chance, just virtually none.
Spore prints properly taken on and stored under glass, or stored in distilled water will be good for a very long time, possibly decades or longer. A print taken on paper which may or may not have been acid-free and stored in a book which may or may not be printed on acid-free paper has little chance of survival. That's just a fact. I hope his works out. If I had that old print I'd certainly be trying. RR

Glass or distilled water storage is best, perhaps followed by foil. Paper is worst. RR
