Debt collector calls for previous owner of new phone number
    #17845953 - 02/22/13 06:54 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

I just got comcast voice because they gave me a package deal. I have been getting debt collector and diversion programs calling me looking for the person who had this number previously.

I haven't started using the number because I have a cell phone and an AT&T number. Should I change the number or wait for the calls to stop. I don't want my name to get mixed up with these agencies.

Answer the calls and tell them that they have the wrong number and that it's a new phone.

Don't answer the phone OP!  If you do, they'll automatically assume you've taken the debt as well as the phone number, and you'll instantly be liable for any monies owed.

Bury the SIM under a pile of rocks, then change your name, then move to Trinidad - it's the only option available to you now.

Alan is talking nonsense, there's no way this has ever happened before.  The company you're dealing with has never had an administrative error, and will easily be able to combine your records with some random person due to using the same phone number.

I've seen some bad info given, but you've hit a new low.

You do not magically become liable for someone else's debt simply because you were assigned an old phone number.

Sorry, I forgot to put the closing [/sarcasm] tag.

OP asks for advice on something that would be self-evident to most (i.e. tell the caller they have the wrong number and explain why).  He recieves advice that explains this obvious course of action, and responds with a faceplam.

Sarcasm seemed to be the only fitting response.

Op receives answers from morons that are of no help. I have answered the phone and told them that it is a new number, yet for some reason they think that I am the deadbeat they are looking for and am lying. The only recourse I have found is to send a certified letter to the agency under my own name, which I don't want to do because they are a scumbag operation.

OP left that out because it is so obvious like asking if the computer that doesn't work is plugged in. :rofl2:

You'll need to put up with the calls until you change your number or send a certified letter.

You could send a certified letter with a fake name and your phone # - They won't be able to check who owns the account.

While changing numbers, at least around here, is as easy as buying a bagel I would just get rid of this annoyance and change the number.
I only use old-school phones (AKA with no GPS or pretty much any connectivity beside calling and texting) but if I was to use a modern one I would also go through the hassle of resetting it.
