Does mycelium attrach contaminates?
    #1784439 - 08/06/03 10:45 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

I've had a bucket of soil and a bit of compost sitting in my garden for a month, no mold ever grew in the bucket. So one day I had some extra colonized substrate and decide to chuck some in and see what would happen. It started to colonize fine, and then a few days later I saw a few green spots on the patch(I removed them and it's doing fine). So now I'm just asking why? I changed nothing about the bucket, or it's location, or anything. So I'm just curious, does mycelium attract contaminates?

I don't think it attracts contaminants, just that the conditions that support mycelium growth also support contaminant growth.

Yes, I understand that, but this bucket never grew mold until I added some mycelium, and I did nothing other than adding the mycelium. So I just found it odd.

I wish I could explain it better, but have you ever seen a pile of dirt/compost go moldy? Naturally this stuff has bacteria or enzimes or something keeping contaminants at bay. But when you toss in substrate, even if it is colonized, contams such as trich can overwhelm the mycelium because that's the nutrient's only defense.

It is your substrate, which is rich in nutrients, that brings about contamination.
