Authorities in Tuscaloosa, Ala., arrested 74 people on Tuesday in a sweeping drug bust, WIAT reports. A majority of those who were arrested are students at the University of Alabama.
Those arrested Tuesday face a total of 183 charges, many of them related to the sale and possession of marijuana, which Tuscaloosa Police Chief Steve Anderson defended in a press conference.
"I know a lot of people consider [marijuana] to be a harmless drug," Anderson said. "It's still illegal to possess it, distribute and traffic it in the state of Alabama. Therefore, it's against the law and we're going to enforce the law no matter how harmless people think it is."
About two dozen students were picked up on campus and in residence halls, the Associated Press reports, and many others lived adjacent to campus.
According to WTVY, the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force has arrested 99 people in all over the course of the two-month investigation. Police also confiscated cocaine, ecstacy, LSD, mushrooms, prescription narcotics and weapons, al.com reports.
UA spokeswoman Cathy Andreen told the Tuscaloosa News that after judicial reviews are completed, "students will receive sanctions up to and including expulsion."
"UA has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to the sale or distribution of drugs, on or off campus, and we will continue to vigorously enforce that policy," UA president Judy Bonner said in a campus-wide email. "These students represent a small group of UA students. UA will review our current policies and practices to ensure that we are doing all we can to educate students to make the best decisions they can and that we are providing an environment that is conducive to learning."

Why? Government doesn't give a fuck about online petitions.
Online petitions are a joke.
-------------------- You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

yeah, because the prison wardens and jailors stuff drugs in people's pockets and it's all a frame up, all those kids are so innocent
if you dont like the laws, fight to change the laws, if the laws havent changed and you dont want to go to jail, dont sell drugs. it seems to work

i'm not saying its not entirely their fault for breaking the law, cause it is. but its not like this corporation doesn't bride politicians to push for keeping the marijuana laws in that state the same or make them more strict, because of the all the low lever incarcerations from marijuana keeping people in jail. thus more bank for them.

I don't know about this case in particular, but private prison are a very disturbing trend.

load of shit
not all penal institutions are run by corporations, in fact only a small percentage are and no penal institution is so powerful that it can go against the will of the people regardless of how many bribes could be given, it's also not as though all politicians could be bribed and none of it takes into account that clearly these people busted with weed were too stupid to keep it at home which is why they're in jail

Plus it's at a college. Even if weed were legal it still wouldn't be allowed on campus. Look at the new laws in co and wa universities will remain the same. At the very least they will get kicked out of school having wasted daddies money.
