Yeah, the forums should be free.
It would also almost completly stop new people for joining. They wouldn't know what the forums are about, and probably wouldn't bother to pay to find out.

I'm sorry, I would never PAY anything to go participate/witness the bullshit that goes down in the OTD.
Pay for OTD-entertainment? Don't make me laugh .

I'd pay for a tomato growing forum.

Now, I'm not saying that I'm for this idea - but I was just thinking and if we kept the forums readable by all users, annonymous and registered, but only allowed registered members to post - then people would be able to see the info and join if they felt like posting.
I don't think $25 membership is reasonable, but a $5 fee for initiating a new account would definitely cut down on puppets and underage kids, allow for better control of community standards (eg. people will not fuck around 'cause a ban is $5 out of their pocket), and even provide $ for hosting fees/upgrades.
I don't think I'd really like to see this happen, but it seems feasible...

I think charging the users of this board even a token amount will completely change the character of the community. This place is successful, at least in part, because of it's free access.

Make the shroomery store a legitimate store. Make the books link to a competitively priced shroomery buy page(not amazon.) 100% of Profits could go towards the site...? Also, I'd like to see the shroomery T-shirts becoming a permanent fixture. As far as a membership, I'd say no way. Unless it was more like a donation where you got a t-shirt, and your name/quote 'forever etched into the shroomery' just to raise some cash. just a thought

Some other sites that I frequent have handled this in a couple of interesting ways. This is assuming money is an issue for the shroomery.
pirate4x4.com has memberships that can be purchased. They give you a few benefits for donating.
1. You can change your user title.
2. You can have an avatar.
3. You can upload pictures to the server.
4. They have contests that are for paying members only from the sponsors.
Most of things already exist here. The last one would be a nice incentive to donate, along with some designation for the users that join. On the PBB you get a red star next to your name to indicate that you are a supporting member. As much great information as I have gotten from this site, and the mass amounts of entertainment I get from the political forum, I would not hesitate to participate in something like this.

hahahaha, no one is going to pay shit! keep dreaming, if I cant change my user title/have an avatar etc etc, then i will migrate my passion for debate to one of the other TEN BILLION message boards on this fine planet of ours. that said, donations should be completely optional

Just sharing what others have done. That other site has over 20,000 members and probably a few thousand supporting members. Some people will pay and some won't. The main benefit over there is the ability to upload pics to their server.

I like cow shit collectors idea about the TShirts. Have a design contest amongst the memebers, and the winning design goes on the shirt. i have a friend who works at a TShirt printing place, she would love to help.

Maybe only you should pay? Thats what makes the Shroomery different from other forums. Tell me this, if you had to pay to get into Shroomery and you didn't want to, where would you go next?

I'd be into buying T shirts and maybe other things available through the site...a Shroomery coffee mug would kick ass, or even Mushroom John glow in the dark boxers...hmmm, thinking about it, I actually would buy those.
