Crumble cakes to bulk?
    #17834671 - 02/20/13 08:48 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I have 5 BRF jars ready to birth. Initially, I was going to try to crumble them to bulk, with a posted tek I found. However, I havent gotten my PC delivered yet, and was planning on using that to pasteurize the coir I was going to use. Simple question, should I still continue to try and just do the same process in a pot, or should I just fruit them in a SGFC.
I mean either way, even the little trays I was going to crumble them into would go into the SGFC. Just wondering if its worth waiting for the extra colonization time of the substrate. I wasas only going to do it with 2 jars, as the other three have invitro pinning, so I didnt want to crumble and lose those ya know?

Thanks!

You're probably better off birthing your cakes in the SGFC, but crumbling cakes with pins into bulk isn't a bad thing either...

Yeah, just make sure your substrate stays in between 140 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

No big pet shops around here. Actually found this stuff at a local grow shop, thought I'd share.

After contacting the company they said it also has a bit of cow manure in it, I think its perfect. Crumbling started! I know people say to use a cheese grater, but after reading some other posts, I feel just crumbling to tiny pieces will suffice.

Yeah, just crumbling will work just fine; sometimes a grater is preferred if you have a particularly dry/tough cake. Looks like you have a decent brand of coir there--most people stay away from the grow shop coir because some brands have fungicides and other stuff added to aid in the growing of plants, not mushies.

spawning cakes to bulk works great, i done that with locally collected horse manure mixed with verm. simply broke up the cakes in a blender breifly and spawned as you would grain.

You dont need a pressure cooker to pasturise your bulk sub, you can do it in a pot. a pot thermometer is handy for keeping an eye on temps just stickk it into one of your jars of bulk substrate into the centre as you want to maintain pasturisation temps monitored from the centre of your bulk sub. 140f -160f for 1 hour.

when i done it though i didnt have a thermoometer and just guessed simmered the water for an hour and it worked out fine. though next time i do it im going to pay more attention to pasturising properly.

If this is your first grow, id fruit them as cakes just incase and get some prints out of it, then try bulk the next  time roundm though its up to you spawning to bulk is very easy.

Specifically asked if it was treated with anything, especially trich. It appears to be clean, I'll find out soon though I suppose. Its already expanded and loose though, no  bricks.

I'm going to head the store and grab like a cooking thermometer before I start, I've already fruited cakes. Already have the SGFC ready for the little trays. About to start a mono so I figured this would be a good step towards that.

just make sure to still dunk your cakes for 24 hours to re hydrate them prior to spawning the cakes to bulk.

i am currently right in the middle of doing this. i had 18 jars that i dunked, then crumbled by hand (as fine as i could get it) into 4 trays of a mixture of 1 coir brick, 2 quarts verm, cup of gypsum and a cup or so of spent coffee grounds. the substrate fully colonized in 9 days roughly and i have just now put them in a SGFC. everything looks great.

for pasteurization i put the mix of everything in an oven bag and boiled it in water until appropriate temps were reached for an hour (used 12 dollar meat therm. from wal mart). i haven't hit the slightest bump in my first time endeavour with this practice and will definitely do this method some more when i fine tune it.

Oh yea what about the jars that are pinning. Will crumbling the cakes halt that process and mess it up? Only have are starting pin a bit, could just use the others for this.

a few of my jars had little wormy looking mushrooms in them. not a lot, but it isn't abnormal to have some pinned jars as they don't all colonize at the same rate. i just pulled em off and ate em before i dunked. . .when they colonize the substrate the myc will get replenished nutrients and it won't make much of a difference in the long run if some of your jars had a few pins.

You can crumble and toss pins into bulk if you want, but if you're not going to crumble, they will survive the dunk and grow well so don't pick them
