Well despite the awesome amount of frozen ice here on the great lakes, I sure miss gardening... (no pun on ice fishing because I love that too).
It's februrary. Last year I started my garden vegi seedlings to soon and they out grew my indoor resources before I could get them outside after the last frost.
Hopefully I do better this year.
I had a job last year in at a nursery. I didn't like the job, but my main reason was to learn as much as i could. I really did learn a lot. It sucks tho because I had many friends there. I would go back but the pay sucked (like not livable sucked). You would be shocked how many girls you impress with knowledge on flowers :P
Anyways, I am out of a job right now and usually relaxation time for me is mushroom work.
but I can't even do that.
I've been coup'd up long enough in this retarded michigan winter.
Garden is the only thing that relaxes my depression. It's almost like mother nature whispers her sweet lullaby that calms my nerver as I care and tender too all my beautiful green friends within my grandmothers backyard!

Awesome! My wife and I are also hoping on a better season this year. What are you planning on growing? We have a few hot ass peppers, and a whole bunch of heirloom veggies. We will be making raised beds for them in the backyard along the back of the house out of things we found in the desert. Hoping to make four-4ftx8ftx2ft planters and fill with amended soil and such. I totally agree with gardening being relaxing. Happy gardening!

awesome im right there with ya, about the warmer weather. even tho i do a lot of winter stuff nothing beats hitting the woods looking for mushrooms. going to be my first time with a garden this yr, wife and i have had this new house for 2 yrs and finally got the inside and a few other things done we were wanting to do to the house its self. so its time for the outside. and seeing how Michigan is always screwy with weather, can only hope it stays warm come mid end of march, and dont get dumped on in april with some snow lol..

You could use cold frames to grow some cool weather crops if you wanted. You'd be surprised by what all you can grow in them. I use them a lot at home in Alaska.
Just clear the snow, if there is any, and place/pin black plastic on the ground and place the cold frame on top. With the top of the frame closed the black plastic will thaw the ground if it's frozen and make the soil workable within a few weeks. Or you can build a fire on the spot you want to plant in to thaw the ground and make it workable. Once the soil is workable and you plant, just be sure to put several inches if straw or pine straw on top of the soil for insulation. Keep the top closed overnight and on cold days and open them on sunny days to regulate the inside temps.
