Can anyone link me to location to order yards of polyester filter media appropriate for use as synthetic filter discs? I believe I have found the correct material on ebay but it is 0.5 micron vs. the typical 0.3 quoted on vendors' filters. I assume there would be little issue with contams at that pore size but wanted to get the opinion direction of the pros.

I was also wondering about this. I've been trying to determine what exactly a filter disk is. That's when I discovered whatman's filter paper. From mycosupply's website:
Quote:
Many companies sell "Synthetic Filter Discs" when really all they are is filter paper. These kinds of filters often can not withstand repeat usage within a pressure cooker or steam sterilizer and they have not been specifically designed for mushroom cultivation. Depending on the brand of filter paper, the filter can experience deterioration and failure
I have heard the same about filter discs - that the pore size increases every time they are autoclaved and over time become more susceptible to contamination. So...presumably filter discs really are just filter paper. Could they really be re-branding filter paper?? If that's true we are being gouged big time on filter discs. It could be cheaper to buy the appropriate filter paper and treat it as a disposable filter after 3-4 uses. I know I have used my filter discs more than that and that's got me thinking it's time to buy new or find an alternative. I still haven't been able to find filter paper at 0.3 micron though.

True synthetic filters are polyester, not paper. They last forever as far as I can tell since I have had the same 24 since I started in 2010. I am looking for a quality source for bulk orders (by the yard) other than the ones on ebay.

Yes, real Synthetic filter Discs last forever just about, but getting the sheets in bulk might be a tough operation.
If you do find a source, please post it here.

I can get 0.5 micron polyester by the yard now. I am unsure about it only because filter discs always claim 0.3 micron filtration. I just do not want a yard of material that is barely doing it's job.

sufficient hepa filters have a pore size of about 0.3 micron. the syringe filters i am using have 0.22 micron.
those pore sizes are sufficient to filter fungi spores and bacteria, but not all viruses (which is irrelevant in our case). 0.5 micron filters out fungi spores, but not all bacteria.
personally, i would consider 0.5 micron insufficient.
