Does colonization require APSOLUTE darkness or what?
    #1781979 - 08/05/03 04:10 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Here's the deal.

my jars are in an area where it's not 100% darkness but it's somewhat dark. (a room with 2 windows). the blinds are over the windows but some light still gets through.

i've got some shit blocking direct light so ....

just wondering if it's alright if it's not 100% darkness.

You will probably get invitro pins and eventually, mushrooms growing in your jars. Put them in a box or something.

Ive heard you can use a red light if you need to inspect your jars, but any other light (esp blue light) will cause pinning, if you have an incubation chamber just throw something like a towel or small blanket over it, it will be all gravy baby

my friend had light on the jars while colonizing with no pins forming until complete (5 days after birth)....so maybe it wont matter much...but if you want to be sure i guess go with what the majority says.

You guys are way to worried about in vitro from light, you know how long it takes for that to occur past full colonization, especially at incubation temps?

My friend colonizes plenty of jars in an open container, don't sweat a little light.

And that crap about blue light, red light... it's really not that sensitive, _maybe_ blue light is a little better for pinning, but find me a link that says so besides someones "observation" and I will believe you...
