I'm currently incubating a small casing at 83*F. Will it hurt to inspect it every day with a flashlight? Will the light hurt as long as I don't drop the temp?

Just let it be. You will end up getting a contam if you check it every day. Check it once a week under normal room lighting.

It is better to leave them alone. Only check on them once a week or so. You can use a red photography light with no ill effects. Even regular light won't hurt them, though they may start to pin within the jar before you are ready... nothing wrong with this, just makes it difficult to get the cake out the jar when the time comes.

Depending on the size of the casing and the amount of spawn you used (more spawn, faster colonization) (I had casings colonized in 3 days and also had casings colonized in 2 weeks); checking them once or twice a week with the flash light (not more than 5 min.) won't hurt. If you want to watch them for some more time, you'll have to use what Seuss recommended.........
